Stock Rods
« on: March 31, 2014, 04:59:01 PM »
There is an outside chance I may get to rebuild a 390 for my brother.  It will be in an truck from the 50's and it won't be a screamer.  Something like;

282H Comp Cam
F-427 Intake
Holly 650 carb
C6AE-R heads
Stock rockers
Shorty factory headers

Ideally a  vintage look with good low RPM torque.

I've got a set of rods from a 61 t-bird with an automatic that has 60k miles on it.  Does anyone see a problem using these rods?  I could put ARP bolts in them.

As everyone knows the cost adds up quickly, so I'm trying to do something on the lower end of the cost side with a built in cool factor

Rods should be fine, especially with the low miles. Seeing as your looking at a 427 f intake and comp 282 cam, I'd put the arp bolts in. Sometimes you just can't let off. ;D If you're trying to do it on the cheap looks like you can find half your parts in classifieds here!

I wouldn't - those are the 352 style (not length) skinny rods - place an add here someone will probably sell you a good set of the common rods cheap - if your going to spend the money on bolts, etc why have those sk
inny rods be your weak link

Agree you don't want the skinny rods versus the beefier 390 OEM rods. Yet, I 'd skip the ARP's, use the stock bolts if the big ends check out and slap 'em in. If they do need rebuild though, then go for the ARPs. Like you said, it's not going to be a screamer.

I'll add a quick +1 to those above who encouraged using the classifieds here.  I have benefitted greatly in that area.  Not only is it likely you'll find what you're looking for (or a link to it), you'll typically end up dealing with people who have specific knowledge about what you want to do, just like in this thread.
