Wow, the pictures alone are fun ;D.  That right there is some pure FE porn if I've ever seen it.  Anyone else ever seen three SOHC timing covers in a stack anywhere (I mean, besides Jay's shop where you'd expect that sort of thing 8))?

$7600 for a 427 block and crank?
and THIS is why I have a 429 in my car.

Jay, that is a crazy collection to come upon.  I imagine was nice to meet the guy too.  He sold it all to the right guy!

Yeah, I was selling it for a friend out of his grandfathers estate. I had it posted on a few forums forums for quite a bit less than that, and no takers. So off to eBay it went, and 2 guys went after it pretty hard. The crazy part was it wasn't nearly as nice as Jay's block here, it had a little rust for getting wet once.

Jay -

It's 80 degrees here in SoCal.  That's the only polite response I can muster at the moment...

Seriously, those factory aluminum heads are a hell of a find!  You could probably sell that block and recoup a good chunk of your outlay :-)
A careful study of failure will yield the ingredients for success.

Hey Doug---

I definitely believe an intervention might be in order.   ;D ;)

On a somewhat allied note:

Back in the day, my first SOHC stuff came from a guy who had access to the place where the 'Skunkworks' people dumped the parts they were done with. There was enough there that he gave me a hand-picked set-up. And I gave him $20.00. We were both happy. And then I went to Indiana to college...

Holy SOHC crap Batman! That's a nice collection Jay.
You said the NOS block was not SOHC specific, meaning no oil return holes drilled through the back of each deck I assume? What else makes a block SOHC specific?

I would love to build a ratty looking SOHC for my bump-side by the way....  ::)

I keep going back and blowing up those photos checking out parts.
Those heads are just beautiful. The port sizes bogle my mind.
I think I'm falling in love. I might need a mail order bride someday when I save up a few shekels to keep her happy. ;D

Spark Arrestors
« Reply #22 on: March 10, 2014, 04:38:33 PM »
I have a set of those spark arrestors on a Bird 3-deuce that cameoff a V-drive boat- on a v-drive, the engine sits backwards, and scoops face the rear so splash water won't get in the engine- so they face the "right" way on car, too. Was thinking about running a set on the '57 Sedan Delivery- any chance you'd like to sell or trade those?

Wow, I hope you at least bought your friend lunch that pointed you to this booty of parts.

A couple of years ago I found a guy in the local NM newspaper that had a large shop\barn on his property that contained dozens of FE blocks, 390's, 428's, 427's - heads, original headers, 3 deuce intakes, dual quad intakes, cranks, etc. He had 30 toploader trannys. You name it, he had it. Then I started asking how much he wanted for say a toploader - he wanted $1800 for one that needed rebuilding! He was literally more than double on what any of it was worth, and he wouldn't budge a nickel. He was an elderly guy and he would chuckle and snicker as he talked prices. I honestly don't think he had any intentions of selling any of it, he just want to make people drool.

He'll kick the bucket eventually and all that stuff will probably get hauled away by some junk metal collector. It's strange to me, I'd want to know that the stuff was getting put to good use somewhere. Sad.........
