Jay's mention of a multi-valve head for the FE got me thinking... Here's a link that discusses the 3-valve head developed for the SBF by Weslake for Dan Gurney in the late 60s. Don't think it got very far, but if you want to keep the FE exhaust near to the stock config then this might be an option?
Btw, the Gurney-Weslake 2 valve Indy engines were screamers, running slide-throttle injectors (instead of butterflies) and methanol fuel... They weren't afraid to tip the nitro can some, if a little more HP was needed for qualifying!
