Sohc vs Boss / size

When comparing a sohc 427 to a boss 429 in terms space in an engine compartment how do they compare ? .  how do they measure up in width , length , hood clearance  with each other ? .  Would a sohc 427 fit in a 1969-1970 mustang with the boss shock tower modifications ?

I don't know exact measurements, but in the only direct replacement situation I was anywhere near, Dennis German pulled the Cammer out of his Maverick and replaced it with a Boss 429 without any further cutting in the engine compartment.

I suppose I'd say that you must have enough $ in hand to work on either design that a bit of cutting would not be a deal breaker.

Yes, a 427 SOHC will fit in a Boss 429 Mustang engine compartment.

Can you imagine doing it to an original Boss 429... twice! It's a beautiful car and George is a great guy.

I remember the Hot Rod magazine that featured the installation of the SOHC into the Boss 429 Mustang.  Great photo, right on the cover.  The hate mail from the purists after that issue was unbelievable.  But I thought it was about the coolest magazine cover I'd ever seen.  Anybody got a copy that they can scan and post a picture of?

Well Jay, of course I have a copy in the archives lol. Next time I see you I'll try to remember to bring it with. Until then here's a photo so people know what to look for.

I think that is one of the all time greatest Hot Rod magazine covers, right up there with the dyno shot of the cammer on the January '65 issue.  Thanks for posting that, Kevin; I figured you probably had that one...

Speaking of HR mag covers, I seem to remember a shot of Connie Kalitta's SOHC TF dragster... it was either a chassis dyno or wind tunnel shot.  That photo would rank right up there!

Wow, thought all here had seen the HR mag inside two-page pic (1965?) of Kalitta's Bounty Hunter rail in Ford's engine dyno test cell. It's actually both a wind tunnel and dyno.

Here's another shot from HR of the same test session. This IIRC was the actual HR cover shot, not the bigger side shot shown above.

The previous red zoomie pic, which I saw in high school (yikes!) was, I still think,  the all time coolest HR pic!
