I don't know on a 54 but have seen a 68 Mustang with the shock towers modified just slightly fit, it appears that the physical "tall" height of the GZ cylinder head is what makes it tight fit in the Mustang engine bay, I haven't seen a GZ in the shop yet but pictures make the cylinder head look like it's 8 or 9 inches tall from the deck.
