I have a 312 y-block crankshaft that has seen better days.  Don't know if it can be saved by going undersized on the mains.  Main bearing sizes for a 312 are very limited.  If not, could save it by going to 292 main bearing size.  Just have to find a good shop to do it.  Shipping it is so expensive now, don't know if that is an option.  Hate to trash it, they aren't easy to find.

Thanks
Paul

Oddly enough, there's a company called Ohio Crankshaft (https://ohiocrank.com/) that is one of the best known crank shops.  Not too far from you.

X2 on Ohio Crankshaft, 5453 SR49 (S), Greenville, OH 45231, 800-333-7113. Not very near to Columbus; due West of Columbus near the IN/OH state line, North of Dayton. They do fantastic work on crankshafts. Good luck.

I was going to call them tomorrow.  They are about 2 hours away.  About $100 in fuel to get it there, probably close to that to ship it.  Not even sure the crankshaft is good.  I had a very nice condition 312 crank that I shipped off for an engine build.  It didn't pass mag.

Why not Ohio Speed Shop in Dayton?  Ohio George's son Greg runs the place and I can't imagine they don't do good work there.

Tried Ohio Crankshaft.  Tried to explain it to the kid answering the phone.  Guess it wasn't an LS, so he said they would pass.  Too busy doing " normal stuff" to want to mess with it.  Called Ohio George's shop.  Said they would do it, reasonable price too.  Then I asked him about the rear main seal if I have to go down to 292 main bearing size.  He said you don't need to do anything about it.  It is .10 inch smaller diameter on the 292 crank.  He said use a rope seal, then said he was busy and had to go.
Not real pleased with either place at the moment.  Anybody got any other place?  I called Adney Brown at performance crankshaft in Detroit.  He had never done one, but said he would give it a whirl.  Said it would start at $500, and go from there.  If it was the last crankshaft on the planet I would give him a try.  He is a good guy, and has done stuff for me before.  Will just junk it at that price, and keep looking.

Ohio Crank does all the local work for my local guy. Never used Ohio George's son ,but if he was confident of the job and reasonable priced and he seemed to know what to do , why upset? Because he was busy cant be upset either, i know lots of people who dont talk alot on the phone . Times that by 10 calls a day and its hard to get things done. As far as Adney ive used him also he is usually backed up , but does great work, $500 isnt crazy money for the time spent to fix the issue.

Guess I should have been clearer.  All the y-block guys I have spoken with say you need to turn down the rear main seal area.  The rear seals on y-blocks are prone to leak even if done right.  Ohio George's son just kind of blew me off and said just use a rope seal, don't worry about turning it down.
