What does a workaholic do when forced to take 20 days off?
« on: September 12, 2013, 10:48:40 PM »
In the military we have what we call use/lose leave.  For the most part, when you get to be senior, you burn off leave on weekends, etc, but I ended up with about 95 days of leave on the books.  That's about 3 years without taking any time off  :o

So, I was the commander of the most award winning squadron in Air Combat command.  The 45 RS Wildcats are an amazing bunch of Americans.  In 2 years, a major award every 2 months while having to move anywhere around the world in under 24 hrs, out of country for as much or more time as they are home, and they and their families only ask to do more, never less.

Needless to say, to lead a bunch of guys like that you have to move quickly yourself, they set a very high standard, which I like to say I have

Well, after two years ALL squadron commanders get the boot, and so did I, my change of command was 27 Aug, and I reluctantly gave up my squadron of 186 aviators and moved to be the Deputy Group Commander, responsible for 17 squadrons and approx 3300 people

But not until I took my use/lose leave...per my boss

So, since 27 Aug I have ........

- Bought a new truck
- Painted my house
- Rewired my cable and alarm in the basement
- Replaced the weatherstripping on my F100
- Framed my 1000 sq ft basement (if I never see another soffit, I will be perfectly happy)
- Put mud guards on the new F250
- Rebuilt the back steps on my house
- Trimmed all the trees in the back yard
- Replaced the rear screen door
- Went to work 3 days out of uniform and on leave just to make sure I knew what was going on in the world

So, next week its back to work, and my guess is it will feel like a vacation!

That's better than losing everything and being put out the door with a disability rating.  I lost all my accrued leave time when they medically retired me, and did not get paid for the accrued leave on the books.  Nada, nuttin, gone.  Not even a retirement ceremony of any kind.  Was in bootstrap with only 8  hours away from Bachelors degree at ASU, and my gold bars.  Still stings when I think about it.  So, take the leave, enjoy whatever time you get away, and keep the cando attitude alive.  Joe-JDC.

A long time ago bout 64 I got off C-130 at Dyess AFB branch chief met the plane told me I was on leave as of tomorrow, because I'd have over 60 days buy June 1and the Air force wasnt paying me,so I took 30 days.
At discharge in Feb 67 I noiticed I was gitting out3 days early, questioned the Major (who was in charge of the dept handling the discharge paperwork) . He looked at my records says your right ,but I dont know why!
I t took me about 10= years wondering why then relized I sold the Air force 63 days leave at discharge and they could not handle that SO I got out 3 days early biggest mistake of my life.
(20/20 hind sight is wonderful) !!!!
But in my defence being 22 and making a whole $220.00 a month with $63.00H/D pay added, got out went to work at Mack making 6 F-4's a night 5 night a week with mandintory O/T,pay went up a bunch!!!

Or Ohio to work on mine if it's closer.
I've been trying to screw up at work just so they'll give me 30 days off....so I can get some things done on my projects. No luck. Cutting and splitting wood the last month has taken all my time, but will save me about $1000-$1500 this winter in heat bills.

Sounds like you need a new project, Ross. I'd take that excuse and run with it.

Sheesh Ross, you could have at least come over and help me get ready for Drag Week LOL!  Who needs all that home repair, anyway.  Congrats on the new assignment and success in the Air Force, sounds like you're a pretty big wheel there...

Sheesh!  Makes me tired just reading it!  Sounds like you've made the best of it Ross.

I think I'd watch a lot of TV, take a bunch of naps, and maybe get out of town for several days.  All of my stuff that waits to get done would probably still be waiting, lol.

Well I am a little tired, but really got a lot done that was haunting me

I will say that this is the last framing project I ever do.  My buddy, a carpenter came over (after I was completely done) and told me I was too fussy that it is all covered in sheetrock LOL

I was fitting corners and measuring like I would with metal ... it's a shame to cover it all up :)

Thanks Larry!

I am 2 below this year, in the zone for Col in 2015.   I don't know if my Wing Commander will push my records up this round, but its a pretty good chance that 1 below he will.

That is if I don't screw up in the new job!
