C4 to fe conversion
« on: April 09, 2026, 12:08:23 AM »
I have not had any luck finding a bellhousing for converting a C4 to my 464. I have a COM FE bellhousing that I am hoping to use for that purpose. Does anyone have any personal experience doing this? I know I would have to make an adapter plate .
I would appreciate any measurements or advice on how to proceed. Also I have the adapter spline to use a C6 torque converter

i have done it It takes a little fabrication and welding, but not that much and results in a perfectly servicable piece  I used mine in my D/SA mustang for 12 years with no problems____Jim Kramer

Hi Jim  thanks for responding, could you give me any details on how to accomplish this. Did you use a C6 converter ?

I Happen To Have One Of Those Converters I Bought From The Crawfords 2 Years Ago, And Am Not Planning On Using It. 515-556-6484 It Has Been Refreshed And Is Ready To Go.

Let me look thru my pile of crap- er, highly valuable vintage automotive memorabilia- I know I have one adapter, and think I actually have two. If you want to live on the wild side, I have an original Ford/B&M/Logghe funny car Clutch C6

Two pictures show generally what was done, the only thing that really needs to be exact is the opening for the c4 pump size, everything else was done with poster board templets  All done on my little Enco type mill  The COM bellhousing is 850 thousands deeper than the C4 bell, so you have to make a spacer to put into the crankshaft to make up the difference This I made on a friends lathe out of a chunk of round stock, no big deal but it does need to be pretty exact  Kind of a week-end project  Almost no money spent, just some time ;)     Jim Kramer       also- you do have to machine a little off the c4 pump bolt  heads  to fit better into the reliefs cut into the com bellhousing  The com bellhousing is considerably thicker than the c4 so I don't think strength is an issue

Thanks Jim for the detailed response it is much appreciated. Would you happen to have a picture of the crank spacer?  Also do you have to do anything with the starter?

The flywheel stays in the same place, but I did forget you also need spacers on the bolts holding the converter to the flywheel Since I changed  converters fairly frequently (it was a class car and I had about 6 different converters I worked with), I tack-welded the spacers to the flywheel  Ill try to find the crank spacer  I realize the whole thing seems a little rube goldberg, but I put hundreds of low one forty sixty foot quarter mile passes on it with zero problems and I may well put the set-up together in a street car in the future with complete confidence   Jim Kramer

Here is a quick drawing of the spacer Now also keep in mind the entire transmission will be pushed back the same distance, mount may take some modding     Jim K

What did you make the converter spacers out of? What was the OD of the converter spacers?

The spacers were made from an appropriately sized piece of steel tubing I found in my scrap pile, OD doesn't really matter as long as all four are the same and obviously thick enough for the strength needed     Jim Kramer
