Sorry to hear about the problems.  Still good to see that you made it into the show - albeit briefly.  I do indeed "feel your pain" having been bitten by an electrical gremlin while in competition a couple years ago.  I'd be inclined to toss out the datalog considering that you had a dead bank - non-firing cylinders do wonky things to O2 data.

Well I can`t say about Jay`s or Barry`s electrical issues.
I recently built a small 600 Volt 3 Phase generator plant for my shed.
The Generator is US made Baldor, the control box was manufactured in the US to my spec and the 15KVA Transformer
was manufactured in Canada to my spec.
And I only went outside Canada to the US because of price. ::)
All of the heavy cabling was made in Canada.
Sure there are a few small things in my plant not made in Canada or the US, but to say  "almost zero elec's Made In USA" is just not true.
I'm not really sure what Jay does, but I'm pretty sure he is in some kind of electrical manufacture thingy.

Although in car land. When you go to Ford to by a solenoid it comes in a red box and is made in China.
And costs 20 dollars more than the same one at Canadian Tire.  :o

Fixed the problem yesterday afternoon, and it was not a failed relay; it was a wire that pulled out of the crimp connector that attached to the relay.  It was my own fault; I was under the dash tying up some wiring before I left for the event last Friday, and I looped the tie wrap around one of the wires attached to the relay by mistake.  The heavy bundle of wires that I tie wrapped together was pulling on the wire attached to the relay, and eventually pulled it out of the connector  :(  At least it was a cheap fix.

The relays are made by Omron, and say Made in USA right on the front.

I'm definitely going to do that once I get the lean condition figured out.

What in the heck kind of tires are the really bad-ass cars in Drag Week running?
« Reply #21 on: September 12, 2013, 05:43:48 PM »
I ask because I watched the videos that showed the 6,  7, 8 second and up cars driving on the public roads with enormous tires..  Sure they might swap slicks at the track as I believe Jay mentioned, but are they then putting monster DOT Legal tires on for the road trip, I'd think some DOT SUV tires would make sense since if you got 800+HP your not about to even fool around on the street anyway. Hard to believe they are running Drag Radials?/doing enormous smoking burnouts on Drag radials?/running Drag Race Only Tires on the Street?  What gives?

Ouch! (on the wire pulled out of the connector!).  In my experience, bad luck tastes a little more sour when you make your own.  Wouldn't have mattered though with the lean condition and no real time to figure it out.  Thanks for posting the trip, trials and photos, always a great read 8)

Damn Jay, I was so excited to see the Mach 1 pull into the water box while watching the live feed at the airport. From that view the launch and the first several hundred feet looked really strong. I couldn't tell what had happened, but since you made it down track and the engine sounded good, I thought Tranny issue of some kind.

The last minute thrash's always seem to catch with us don't they?

Did you get a 660 time?

I agree with Barry that bizarro AFR reading may not tell the true story. I had a launch enrichment issue at DW 12 and I was seeing 14, 15, even 17 when I tried to launch normally. I ended up having to walk it out for the rest of the event. It took Scott and I about an hour of live in car launch tuning to get it right with the MS3X.

Meanwhile the plugs looked good and it was happy down track during DW so I had to put with running 1.8 60 ft times at 9.8-9.9.  Your pass looked to be mid 9's to my eye before the missed shift.

The first pass felt good, Bill, and after I figured out that I'd probably just shifted it wrong I was really looking forward to the next one.  The car should run a mid 9 as it is.  But then after the first pass all these other problems surfaced, so that was that.

I know the engine is running lean because of the plugs,  but I'm beginning to think its not as lean as the A/F readings indicate.  The O2 sensors are pretty close to the end of the collectors, and I think I might be getting some outside air spoiling the readings.  I bought a set of collector extensions last week, and assuming I make it to the track over the next few weeks we'll see if the A/F readings change with the extensions in place.

Just wait 'til next year  ;)

I tried a set of 4" turn outs from the exit of my x-pipe which is around 6 inches after the tail shaft of the AOD. In addition to being LOUD, removing the rest of the full exhaust system with it's four mufflers removes a net of 50 pounds ands is good .15 seconds off the ET.

At idle the AFR's jump around quite a bit, but at WOT they stabilize and are repeatable. My sensors are about 10" from he collector flange, but there is another 10" to the X and 8" of the x-assembly itself and the turnouts are 12"  so my sensors see less ambient back flow than the typical 18" straight extension. At WOT they leaned it out about a half point 12.5 to 13. Adding fuel to the two top lines of the map picks up another .1 second. But we didn't bother after the TnT day at Tulsa last year as we weren't in a competive situation, just a survive to the finish situation as usual.

This year would've been competitive LOL!  Curt Johnson's Mustang would've slaughtered both of us.  Those later model Mustangs make great race cars because they are so light; Curt's car was 600 pounds lighter than mine.  Takes a lot of power to make up for 600 pounds...
