Cruiso/C6 swap in a ragtop with console shifter
« on: October 04, 2025, 02:15:26 PM »
Have any of you Mudhens successfully replaced the Cruiso with a C6 in a '62 or similar Galaxie XL ragtop (Sunliner etc.) with a console shifter? Wondering about length, shift arm for the console shifter, crossmember for the convertible frame etc. I have a few Cruiso's around, but also have a couple nice C6's. TIA

You keep your transmission mount and add a plate to each side of the body mounts. The shifter will need a bracket to provide the ratio from the COM to the C6. I'll try to put both pictures on here to show you what you need. The driveshaft will remain the same but the transmission yoke needs to be changed to a C6 yoke.

I've done three 63s, one convertible and two XLs. That frame mount Jim posted worked, all the driveshafts and yokes were the same. Have to change the starter and flex plate. I had to do something to the emergency brake cable but got it to work.

I did something very similar to Jim’s instructions on TKO600 installation.  Downside was that crossmember moved back just far enough the emergency brake cable did not reach its mounting location.  I fabricated a new mount for the emergency brake cable and mounted it to the crossmember to resolve.  Worked just fine.  I’ve got some pictures and more details somewhere on my laptop. If you need mor details message me and I’ll find them.

OK, this one is a convertible XL with the big console and shifter. Was the convertible you did an XL? Frame/ crossmember is quite different from a hardtop in that area. Considering the swap because the old 390 still runs great, but I have all these 427s.... Also have a couple sets of shorty cast manifolds that would probably fit

Although you have a convertible I still think the side plates will work on your car. Mine was an XL hdtp and I don't think they made different "COM Transmissions" just to suit your convertible. They may have changed the shape of the transmission mount but I don't think they put special transmissions with different mounting locations just to suit a convertible.

Yes the convertible crossmember is different but it moves back the same amount. Mine was a 500. I had to dimple the floor in one spot for the bolts on the servo.
