Camshaft ideas
« on: September 16, 2025, 11:41:36 PM »
Building a inexpensive rat rod out of a 67 econoline pickup using up some old parts I have. Truck was 2400lbs from the factory. I'm installing a 351 clevor and moved it back 14" with a top loader. Engine = 4.00 scat crank, 6.200 rods with dss pistons, should be about 10.6 to 1. Factory Cleveland quench heads with a little bowl intake side and as much smoothing i could to straighten  on the exhaust. 2.190/1.71 valves, Wieand boss tunnel ram using PMS adaptors, 2 650 dp brawler carbs, I have many different gear sets up to 5.14 for the 9" and looking at a Crane# F-248-3334-2-8 cam= .533in .555ex but will be running 1.8 rockers to make it .599in and 624ex. Adv duration 310in 320ex, @.050 .248in .258ex on a 108 lc timing events are open 21*in and 62*ex close is 47*in and 16*ex. I used to run this cam in a bogus boss 302 in the late seventies and it was ok. Really just looking for something on a shelf as it's probably not worth bothering people like Brent Lykins or anybody.

You can bother me.

If you have it, use it, but here's my thoughts:

1.  Lazy lobes
2.  Not enough duration to warrant anywhere near a 5.14 gear with a 408ci engine.  On a solid flat tappet, you don't see the duration at the valve that you would with a hydraulic cam, because you're moving through lash first.
3.  I certainly would not run a 1.8 rocker with it.  Cams need to be designed to work with steep rocker ratios, otherwise it can put the valvetrain through a lot of distress.
4.  Ton of advertised overlap.  A lot of .050" overlap too, not efficient.
