NEED CORRECT PART NO. FOR 68 MUSTANG FB MANUAL STEERING GEAR
« on: March 19, 2025, 01:47:57 PM »
the steering ger on my 68 FB  is shot and I have found a stock replacement but i need to know if it is the manual or pwr steering  MUSTANG STR BOX.

The part no. that is readable is C8ZB 35 S or5(not clearly readable) A,     date code 7A9,  four full turns lock to lock.  Is this the manual steering gear?

Pls advise

Should be a tag on one of the bolts……

The two ratios are 19:1 (5 turns) and quick ratio 16:1 (4 turns). Assuming this isn’t a 68 CJ, then the 4 turn box is for power steering. CJ cars got the quick ratio box whether manual or power steering.

I have the 16-1 box in my 67 mustang Trans Am replica. I have it manual tho. The box is worn out and I didn't want a rebuilt box. Its just a crap shoot as are flaming river box. I found a company in the states that makes brand new ones and no core charge. It's made by Lares and available from Summit. They are good as well. It fit perfect and has zero free play( the tag is my work).. I have EPAS steering in the car as well..

The common part/tag # for the 16-1 box is SMB-K. SMB-F is the Q/R box but the only thing different is the tag.
