64 Galaxie control arm and header questions
« on: March 12, 2025, 02:22:23 AM »
Curious if anyone has any experience with PMT fabrication? They seem to be the only ones who build new control arms for the 64 and older full size cars now that Fatman went under. I just bought a 64 500 XL and the front suspension is going to need some attention soon and since I'd like to lower it just a little a new set of control arms seem like a good idea but there are any that are decent quality out there.

I'm also curious if anyone has experience with what headers that are currently available fit a 390 4 speed car with power steering without having to re-engineer the car? FPA's? I know they fix with an automatic, I've never tried with a 4 speed car. Considering maybe trying a set of the Kugel repop shorty cast iron headers as a possible back-up plan since I can't find any reasonably priced long cast versions around here.

Thanks.

I used SPC front upper arms and global west lower arms and strut rods in my 66 fairlane I also have FPA headers they got made for borgersons power steering fe c6 they fitted my lakewood scatter shield and 4 speed fine I had to put a small dint in one pipe because of the huge outer lip on the scatter shield on the drivers side. FPA headers are worth every cent all the other front end parts are great too. Not sure if they make full size car stuff but could be worth a look

The SPC stuff looks pretty nice, I hadn't heard of them before. Sadly, like Global, they don't offer anything for the 64- full size cars. I've still got the power assist but have been considering the Boregeson swap, especially since I have a spare column for the car - all pending header fitment. I did leave a message for Stand at FPA, waiting to hear back still.

That is a shame they don't make 64 gal stuff as for the Borgersons steering They are a good there is some work to fit one and it did take me around 4 trips to the wheel alignment shop to the steering working nice I also had to play with the power steering pump pressure and flow rate to get the feeling I wanted from the steering.

I've used the Borgeson stuff in a Mustang and 2 Fairlanes (as well as few brand X projects) and have been pretty happy with their stuff. I don't really have a problem with the power assist stuff, but an integral box is definitely a lot nicer and a cleaner set up. As soon as I figure out the exhaust situation I'll probably order the new steering gear. I'd also expect to have to fiddle with the pump a little since I'd like to keep the stock Eaton pump.
