406 Starter
« on: September 30, 2024, 07:48:42 AM »
I just upgraded from a cruisomatic to a C6, and pulling out the old started almost killed this old man. The car is a 63 Galaxie with a 406, FPA headers, and a C6, Do you have any recommendations on starters?

Powermaster.......9506M XS Torque.   You did change out the flywheel for the 184T version I trust....

Thanks, yes I did change out to the 184, also does the starter you recommended clear the FPA headers?

I have aa Mustang, clears those, not sure about a Galaxie.  It's pretty compact, and clockable.

One issue I've seen with the Powermasters is that the gear does not come out far enough to fully engage the flywheel.  It still works, but if there are any problems it will chew up the front half of the teeth on the flywheel.  I've machined the front plate on those Powermasters so that the starter sits deeper in the opening to address this issue.  It would be a good idea to check that before installation, just to see what you're dealing with.

I prefer the RobbMc starter, which does engage the teeth fully, and also has an option for a nose cone to support the shaft, rather than having the gear cantilevered out towards the flywheel when it is engaged.

In addition to what jay said,

I like the master torque 9606 it fits trucks with headers which are tight easier and can actually be changed with the header in the truck. Some including me have had to clearance the housing to clock it all the way up but it's not bad.
