Alternator Belt
« on: August 22, 2024, 07:08:24 PM »
Hopefully an easy one for the collective wisdom here, trying to avoid running around town.
As simple as it should be I need some input on an alternator belt choice.
The recommended and belt I purchased years back squeels sometimes.
I am at the end of travel for tensioning and it was that way from the beginningso not super tight.
The belt seems too narrow for the alternator pulley and a bit too long, I think it is the 7420 series at .41" wide.

1965 Thunderbird 390 w/AC, all original bracketry and pulleys.
Does anyone have any recomendations on brand, width, and length?
I'm looking at the .47" wide belts but just not sure.
Thanks.

I prefer Gates, but have also used Goodyear and Continental.  I dint know if a wider width belt will fit the pulley groove.  Sounds like you need a shorter belt.  Gates makes a 7415 and a 7410.  (Those last 3 numbers are the length….)

I run a gates belt with a length of 1055mm or 41.5 inches long and it puts me close to half way on the adjuster. I run cvf pulleys

Thank you.
I think it is a high output alternator and sounds like some of those have samller pulleys.
