Fe pushrod checker recommended brand and size range.
« on: January 19, 2024, 04:26:36 PM »
Hello everyone
Just looking for a recommendation on what brand and size range pushrod length checker to purchase. For example 8.800-9.800 or taller range one?
As I understand the factory length pushrod for 390 fes where 9.590 and 9.620.
This is for a fe390 block bored 0.030 over stroked to a 445 with trick flow cylinder heads and a c7zx-9425-a intake manifold if that information helps.
Just wondering what size range pushrod checker is best to buy ready for measuring what pushrod I need.
Thanks all for the help/information and recommendations.
Many thanks.

I have always just made my own by cutting a factory push rod. Shorten the push rod perhaps 3/4" and threading the inner diameter
with a 1/4-20 thread tap.
A 2" piece of threaded rod (1/4-20) and a couple of 1/4-20 nuts - now you have your own push rod length checker.
I hate spending money on something so absolutely simple to make.

Example of a longer version for shell solid lifter application:

With the homemade checker (looks great to me) how would you order push rods. Do you measure to the bottom of the cup, top of cup? I've heard order by "overall length" But if cups are different depths that couldn't be right.

Smith Brothers push rod order page:

Can specify measuring from Ball to bottom of cup - or overall length.
