427 block with no spacers
« on: December 03, 2023, 11:19:09 AM »
Hello, if the side spacers were lost on a 427 block, is it possible to fit with new ones without line boring if everything else is OK?
What would be the procedure?

Here is the drawing of them for fitting.

I made a set for one of my motors, it took a while to do but they all fit just fine. It also helped that I have a stationary disc sander to play with. The big thing was to sneak up on the gap measurement. A mike is a must, as well as an inside snap gauge.

They are easy to make and I would still do a line hone or at least bore gauge the mains to see if they’re round.

Thanks, that is a really neat blueprint.

According to drawing there are 3 size spacers. Do you know the measurements of the 3 sizes? How much of an interference fit should there be?

The spacers are individually fit to each spot.  With that in mind, make sure to mark each spacer's location when you are making them. Generally, they are not interchangeable.  Beyond that, the fit should be fairly snug.  e.g., require light tapping with a soft mallet to get them into place after the main cap bolts or studs are torqued to spec.

Here is the drawing of the the block, showing the factory spacers.

You'll note that the tolerance between the caps and the block, is .3725 - 3775 and you only have 3 spacer widths (red, blue & yellow). They tell you what spacer to use for the particular gap range of .0017-.00165. So, the spacers are just one size and that size, maybe .00085 larger than the small end of the spec i.e. the blue maybe .375 thick., the red, .3767, Yellow, .3733.

If that's the case, Ford is allowing .00085 interference and .00085 clearance for the min/max fit.

It would be good, if we could get the specs for the part numbers of the 3 size spacers.

I'll try to measure my spacers tomorrow and see what I have. Who ever rebuilt it last, did not put them in as marked but, they were all tight, with the exception that one wasn't as tight as the others.

On all the side oilers I’ve worked on, usually one side falls in and the other has to be persuaded….

All my spacers are .375.

I guess that's why they didn't bother putting them in the right place.

+/- 85 ten thousands is still pretty dang tight tolerance.  IMHO that easily exceeds the accuracy of a hand held snap gauge and common mic or caliper.  So yes - the "sneak up on it" approach would be the way to go LOL.

When we crossbolted the C4 block at Roush's Prototype Engine Shop for the series of articles I wrote for Mustang Illustrated Magazine, I used a set of crossbolt caps I bought at a Milan swap meet. The caps included eight spacers. We found, however that to get a perfect fit, we had to make a couple of spacers. The spacers were all hand-fitted, and the tech who did that job insisted that each one go in place with only 'thumb-push' effort.

I probably have a dozen spacers or more (been picking them at swap meets). If I measure and fit according to specifications, then install and spin the crank and everything feels smooth, would that be satisfactory? If rotational torque is within spec.?
