Cam pin
« on: April 29, 2023, 03:55:58 PM »
Iā€™m looking for a source for a 1.5ā€x .312ā€ cam pin. Or .312ā€ cam pin stock that I can cut to length.

Thanks,
Fred

I ordered 2-3 cam pins from Mcmaster and they came back different from the advertised size and were too loose. I got what I needed at a machine shop.

Unfortunately the cam pin sizes for different cams are all over the map.  Along with my timing cover I used to supply a 3/16" diameter pin, 1.5" length, with a 10-32 hole in the middle so that it was easier to pull out.  I was getting them from McMaster Carr.  They were all in spec, but a lot of the cams had a hole that was slightly smaller in diameter for some reason, at least according to my customers.  So I quit supplying those pins.

I would try McMaster Carr anyway, because the pins are pretty cheap, but don't be surprised if you have to slightly enlarge the pin hole in the cam.

Jay, which dowel pin material were you buying from McMaster? I'm looking at the 4140 16,000 lb breaking strength. Or there is M2 tool steel. Not sure which would be better. I'd hate to pick the wrong material and shear a pin.

It seems most of these pins as specified by the O.E.M.'s are quite malleable and I would probably agree with this intent.   :)

The 4140 are plenty strong.

Look for "pull" dowel pins. They have a internal thread, at one end, that allows you to screw a slide hammer, into them, to pull the dowel out.

The ones I used were stainless, see the link below.  Bear in mind that the torque on the cam bolt is what really is supposed to hold the gear to the cam, not so much the pin.
