Console color change
« on: April 15, 2023, 09:29:04 AM »
Anyone out there have experience with color change on '62-'64 style Galaxie console? These things have a strange coating over the steel with simulated leather grain embossed on it. The original color is in the strange coating, not painted on. Would like to use acrylic enamel to match other pieces inside the car. On the other hand would dye be a better choice?

I'm familiar with the consoles but didn't know they had any sort of special coating.  I thought the leather grain was on the metal itself so not of much help there.

I did want to point out that the interior paint colors are not the same as the outside.  E.g. my car is Rangoon Red on the outside but the lower dash is a different red.  I was able to use a Mustang paint for the dash, for the 64/65 Mustangs from Scott Drake I think, which shared the Galaxie colors that year.

The coating is a vinyl applique used to simulate a leather surface.

There are a few products you can use on the console that are flexible coatings/paint. I used SEM, but you can get spray cans of Duplicolor that will do the same thing, you just need to make sure you clean/prep the surface well. The SEM has held up vey well.

I used a vinyl specific spray can paint/dye for my 66 console. Same textured vinyl surface.

I think the brand was Mar-Hyde. It's been a few years..... has held up really well.
It seems to "soak into" the surface.

I even used it on the vinyl seats to change the color from green to white.

I used SEM but you are limited to color selection. You could try acrylic enamel with a flex agent like they use in bumper covers.
