Odd horn problem, 1970 Mustang, can't get both to work.
« on: February 24, 2023, 08:04:50 PM »
This all started when I hit the horn button and nothing! Heard clicking sound from both but no horn sound.

Got one to work, replaced the other (tested weak) and installed it. No sound but both still click. Disconnected power to the new one and the other worked! No relay on a '70 so I'm stumped. Ideas?

Dirty or glazed contacts in the steering column?

Assuming this is a Mach 1 based on your member name....   Try powering the horns directly from the battery.  This will tell you if the horns are bad or if there is a problem in the horn circuit.  If the problem is in the horn circuit, first clean the connections at the rimblow switch under the center steering wheel pad.  Apply power to these contacts to see if the problem is a) in the circuit between the steering wheel and horns or b) in the rimblow switch.  It sounds to me as if the rimblow switch is going bad; is it the original switch?  I had similar problems with mine.  I went ahead and restored the entire steering wheel while I was at it.  The best switch, in my opinion, is the Daniel Carpenter version.

Thanks guys! Long ago I did replace the original wheel with an aftermarket Grant that has a center-based horn button. I'll pull the wheel and check the contacts. What's odd is that I did test the old and new horn directly to the battery and both work fine. Yet as it sits now, only 1 works (driver's side, cheap FIMM aftermarket horns but they did work for years) so if I connect the pass. side (new FIMM) horn, neither one works! Leaving the pass. side horn disconnected, the other side works. I also suspect the now old OEM wiring (hey, it it a '70!) to that pass. side as well. I'll see........
