Not 100% positive, but I believe the Fairlane engine compartment was the same from 1966 thru 1969. Years ago, I had to replace the rear main seals on my 69 R code Cobra, I removed the oil pan and changed the seals with the engine in the car, but I did have to jack up the engine to do so. I unbolted the motor mounts, and raised the engine high enough to stick a piece of 2x4 wood between the motor mount and the frame brackets. Now, my 428 still had the stock exhaust manifolds, with headers I have no idea if the headers would allow the engine to go up that high. I also unbolted the front sway bar, and dropped the oil pump down into the oil pan, and had to rotate the crank so that the rear crank counterweights were not at the bottom , causing interference with the pan rail.

The method Rory described would be the only way to get that pan out, ( failing a removable crossmember which I have seen in place on our cars where the owner has a reason to pull engine/trans/oil pan with some frequency).

What’s up with the Z bar?  Cracked/split?

As above.  The Falcon/Fairlane for those years is welded in and there's not enough clearance IMHO to drop the pan and have it turn enough to clear the pump pickup and the cross member.  So you'll have to at least raise the engine as much as possible.  The limit will be when the bell runs out of space in the tunnel.

Be nice to have a removable crossmember like a Mustang - but IMHO that is one of the main reasons you tend to find cracked shock towers in Mustangs.

Like others have said getting your engine up high enough is necessary .And just go on and drop the oil pump into the pan you don't need to so high whenever you do that .My comet has headers so maybe that is why I dropped the pump .On your blocks for holding the engine up shorter pieces of wood or steel work good there isn't a whole lot of room for anything long .This is a tough job but it can be done .The great advantage is that flat oil pan simple and easy. Good luck Doug

if i drop the pump will my shaft drop or will it stay in place?maybe i could just unhook the pickup? i have never fooled with a oil pump.im not a short block man even though i have changed heads, intakes, headers, etc. many times over the last 40 years.but i have never put my short blocks together.i always had the machine shop assemble them.

Doubtful that just removing the pickup tube you provide enough room, the pump is only 2 bolts, unless the driverod is badly gummed up in the distributor shaft, (very unlikely), the drive rod will come down with the pump. it is not really a big deal to put the pump and drive rod back in, you just need to verify that the top of the shaft fits into the hole in the block, and into the distributor shaft, although personally, I would remove the distributor, both for ease of shaft installation, and being able to make sure the shaft is properly located inside the hole in the block, not to mention, being able to prime the oil pump to ensure the pump will prime after being off the engine.

Frydaddy it isn't so hard to do .Dropping the oil pump makes this an easier job you can only get the engine up so high .You need to watch how close the fan is to the radiator and probably remove the fan shroud or just loosen it .If you try leave the oil pump on the engine has to really go up .I have a 66 comet also I pulled the pan more than once .If I can do it so can you just don't get in a hurry .And if this is something you really need to do you have no choice so just be patient .Maybe Rory mentioned it in his post I cant remember but the sway bar has to go also .Good luck and again it isn't so difficult it just sounds like it is Doug

Fryedaddy,
I don't know what resource you have but you may want to consider pulling the engine. In my opinion that I made years ago. Pulling an engine from these cars is rather easy and time efficient. Lying on my back and dropping the oil pan brings back bad memories. It can be done as others have said and I've done it too. I just have no desire fishing for oil pan bolts blindly. It never failed for me to drop the oil pump gasket and then feeling around for it. Aftermarket pans with baffles only add to the fun. While there are many successes, unless you have rookie luck you'll run into a number of small but irritating issues. My choice, pull the engine, if you can.

thanks for the replies.Doug,i dont want to pull the engine.hooker headers all the little stuff like alt, rad,etc is alot more hassle to me.i have an electric fan.i guess i will try dropping the pan with the engine up an inch or two.i have jacked up the engine before to get the  headers in.i dont think the headers will hit, bell will only go up so far.

I did that several times on my 67 Ranchero. Undo the two sway bar U-clamps, the two big motor mount nuts and I used two pieces of 1 x 2 stuck between the mounts and frame brackets. The oil pump can be dropped into the pan.
It's a pretty simple job compared to 90% of other cars.
