injection questions???
« on: April 20, 2013, 11:03:01 PM »
Yes folks I am stepping over to the cough, choke I,I, I injection side. There I said it LOL. For my off road FE I need something that will run up side down (NEARLY). What I got is about a 1000 cfm carburetor requirement, so how does this translate to manifold cfm and injector size? I am looking at the Fast EZ port injected kit for injected handicapped individuals like me can you guys throw me a bone? Also will my cam work or do I need some funky grind?Thanks....Jon

The Q is... How much HP do you plan on making? Also what are the cam specs? The Fast EZ kit does have its limitations.... Just trying to help out.

You don't need any special cam for an injector setup, whatever works with the equivalent carb will work for an EFI system.  Injector size will be determined by the horsepower level you want to make, like Wes said.    Divide horsepower by 2, then that number by the number of injectors to get the approximate injector size in pounds per hour.  So, if you will be making 600 HP, 600 / 2 = 300, 300 / 8 = 37.5.  FAST lists a 36 pound and a 42 pound injector, either of which would work fine.  Whatever intake manifold will support the 600 HP level will work fine with the injector setup.

If you want to make this real easy on yourself you could get one of those FAST EZ EFI throttle body injector setups.  Just bolt it on like a carb and go.  They are limited to 550 HP though...

Good rule of thumb, I do recommend rounding UP not down though.  So a 42 lb for 600-ish hp 8 injector system would be pretty accurate.

If you round down, you trade duty cycle for flow, which isn't a problem until you max out the injectors and then you have to crutch them with more pressure.  There is no downside to too big, within reason, as you program the pulse width and slope to make them do what you want.  (or the program does it for you in the new systems)

Save your money and go propane !  It will  run upside down , your engine temps will be lower,it will start better, run cleaner, and you can lug them down way lower than gas .......

Propane is not exactly cheap and I live in a cold climate so half the year it will not run without a tank heater and all that. I am looking for about 600 HP, my cam specs are 287 293 234 240 .594 .598 @112○. I definitely do not want to have to play online gaming with the engine while I am driving it every time I start it. A little set up is not a big deal with a hand held programmer but nothing serious, and no TBI, been there done that it is JUNK! Any suggestions on a ECM that won't break the bank, the  Fast EZ port injection kit is about 800 bucks and said I thought up to 1000 HP but I could definitely be wrong on that? And self program is definitely the way for me.  Thanks guys....Jon

How long does a 3 lb cylinder last? I used to work on fork lift trucks and they did not like the cold too much below 30 or so, Icing up evaporators and low pressure in the cylinder would cause a lot of headaches. I would need to go as low as -20 here in Chicago, it gets pretty cold here and that would be when I would need it most.

^^^ Now that's what a jeep is supposed to look like.. unrecognizable.  ;D Too many 4 wheel drive grocery getters in my neck of the woods. Suspension lift, body lift, nerf bars & a huge set of Mickey Thompsons worn to the nub from all highway driving.  ::)

Look into the Accel DFI too. Those are a great unit and easy to tune as well. Its a little more do it yourself but the system tunes itself. Check it out....

That is a nice Jeep!  I will be using it as a driver also and I am leaning toward gas also to make things simple, Pull up fill and gone. It will definitely see some hard-core use though. I have owned several and still have my first, a 1983 CJ7 Renegade but it needs a tub and who knows what else after sitting 25 years. I stashed it away when I got married so she wouldn't sell it on me like my 68 ss big block Nova..... Jon

Here's my yard art.
I pump the tires up once in a while and drive it around the road.

We have a couple M38s laying around, one out back. One M38 in the shed waiting for a body restoration restoration, all else is done. A M37 Dodge power wagon,  almost complete. A M818 Am General 6/6 5 ton tractor with fording kit. What is left of a M38A1. And a 83 CJ7 that was my first Jeep, needs a tub and hood.......Jon
