R-12 in itself is outlawed. So it really doesn’t matter if you’re licensed. You just need a buyer.

It’s not illegal to sell, small quantities of personally owned R-12.  Opening a system, topping off, etc. is a different story.  As per the Montreal Protocol, I believe R-12 should be phased out this year completely.  It’s horrible for the environment, but R-12 is a very good refrigerant.

A substantial study with no preconceived notions will likely reward the student with a clear view that the campaign against R-12 has been largely a made-up project by those who have a reason to champion the change.

I believe it's a good practice, when there is a concerted attack such as we've seen regarding R-12, to ask, 'Qui Bono'? Who benefits? There's a lot of money to be made when there is a mandate for change such as this.

DuPont may or may not have profited.

Ricky, I know this doesn't answer your question but personally I don't see the need for r12 anymore.  Both the Fairlane and Galaxie have been converted to 134 using aftermarket condensers from Vintage Air.  They get pretty cold and work well here in SE Tx where we really need it to be able to drive our cars in comfort in the summer months.  You can hang meat in my '14 Expedition with both the rear and front air on!  :)

There is a case to be made for keeping a 60's car R-12. To convert to R-134a need change the oil type, change the hoses to barrier type, change all o-rings and seals to R-134a compatible materials. R-134a needs a better condenser both for efficiency and oil transfer. Finally R-134a does not carry the oil as well so a newer compressor type is a good idea as if system gets a little undercharged can burn up the old style compressors.

Are a lot of guys switch over without doing all that but down the road usually have problems while as long as the system is solid and leak free keep the R-12 and go.

Regarding the ozone hole thing how does the R-12 get up there when is heavier than air? Yes Dupont held all the patents on the R-134a and the ban certainly was to his advantage. Now they want to get rid of R-134a as it damages the ozone layer... Guess the patents are expired. It never ends does it?

First of all we know why R12 was claimed to harm the environment. It was a lie. Secondly it's not outlawed in the US. You can sell it right on Ebay. I bought six pounds for my vehicle last month.  R12 is 20% colder than R134 conversion systems. If you leave any of the R12 compatible oil in the system it will destroy the Sanden conversion compressors and requires all new hoses.

Regarding the ozone hole thing how does the R-12 get up there when is heavier than air?

A quick search notes "CFCs break down in sunlight to release chlorine and bromine, which destroy ozone molecules." So just a chemical reaction is all.  R-134 apparently isn't so great either.  The fact that R-12 does have an actually impact of upper atmosphere ozone doesn't take anything away from the observance that Dupont easily stand to profit from the changes needed to reduce the environmental impact.

Ricky.

Supposed to be in order to buy or sell but nobody checks!

I did get the government license for it years back.

Since I still have 2 FE powered trucks with AC I could use a couple extra cans.

Keeping them both R12 if I can.
