Headers
« on: July 04, 2021, 10:05:48 PM »
So I figured since I have the motor out I would get new ceramic headers. Well it was only a year ago they were 740 bucks and I have a 100 dollar gift certificate, so I just went to Jegs and summit and they are now 890 bucks. The shame of it all is after 2 or 3 years they start to rust. Well I guess I will be recoating them. Anyone know how much that is now so I know what to expect.

There were a few posts here about header coating companys a while back

Seems some had much better luck with one company I canna remember, perhaps they will post

On another note, US body 65 F100 fiberglass hoods went form 500 to 700 bucks

I had Hooker 6114 JET HOT ceramic coated and they crumbled and rusted after a few yrs. I sent them to Swain tech coatings upstate NY. They blasted them and coated them in and out. Its a flat finish. When I blew the last motor I panted them with VHT ceramic paint and  4 yrs later and they still look good. I should say that you can paint over their coatings.

Hmmm maybe I will try that Harry and at least see how they look. It’s really a shame that these coatings don’t last long. And for 900 dollars you would think the Hookers would last more than 3 or 4 years. I mean I don’t drive the car in the rain and I only put 13-1500 miles on it in 5 years.

My ceramic coated Hookers have been on the car for almost 20 years, and besides the black areas where oil dripped on them, and a small amount of surface rust near the exhaust port, they still look pretty good. I know you live in the Jersey area, is there any chance that salt air from the coast is affecting yours? Are yours actually rusting, or is it just a surface rust? Surface rust is a result of contaminants getting on the coating and oxidizing, but it can be cleaned. If it's rusting underneath the coating, then just ignore me  ;)

yeah Doug well I live on Long island which is worse. I guess its not rusting through but some surface rust. As silly as it sounds this last go around my motor was very dry. My motor is out and figured if the headers were 700-750 and I could sell mine maybe 150-200 then 550 wouldnt be to bad being coatings gotta be 300-350 so i figured for th 200 dollar difference i would get new ones. But now that they are 900 dollars its not working out. But nothing ever seems to go my way so Im getting used to it. On a different note I made it to 55 years old today boy it seems like it was only yesterday I was 54. ;)

I suppose that header coating are only as good as the company doing the job. I have had 3 sets of headers coating by 2 different local companies in British Columbia Canada. The first set was a pair of custom headers that TomP built for my FE Fairmont about 20 years ago. Those headers were 8 separate tubes and 2 collectors, so you would think they should have been easy to coat, since every tube was totally accessable, but they started to get rust pits after a few years, and the collectors, which admittedly were older, as they had been also used on my previous headers, ended up paper thin. like an aluminum Coke can, and split. Later on, I had a pair of FlowTech long tubes for my 85 Mustang 5.0 Stocker, down at the other company , and 5 years later, they still look like new. Both sets were done with the shiny, almost chrome looking finish, and were just used on race cars.
About 7 years ago, I bought a new set of FPA bare steel headers for the 428CJ in my 59, and after making certain they fit the car properly first (which they did), I had them coated, in a mat gray finish, at the same place that did the FlowTechs. They have now been on the car for 4 or 5 years now, although I have only had the car on the road for a year now. I have driven the car about 3000 miles now, and they look just as good now as they did when I first installed them. I also had another set of custom made FE Fox body multi piece headers that I bought from a Super Stock racer from Virginia. They were coated by Jet Hot Coatings, and they still look pretty good for being over 10 years old.
Personally, I prefer to buy the headers bare, and have them ceramic coated, only after I have tried them in the car, to ensure they fir properly. The last thing I would want to do is to have to modify or dent any tubes that have already been coated.

Well, I used Jethot coatings. My headers are the RFE, so multiple pieces. I went with a colored coating, not traditional ceramic.  $950 plus shipping there.  They shipped them back free. Unless the shipping cost was somehow squeezed into the $950.lol   If that helps in your decision making.
