Clambake movie (Elvis) on last night. 427 FE
« on: July 02, 2021, 11:10:38 AM »
First time I have watched Clambake movie - was on TV last night.
Noticed an engine on the table behind Elvis.
Dual quad 427 - low riser I believe. No cross bolts on block, and low riser 2 X 4 intake.
very cool!

I believe the introduction of cross-bolts came with the last batch of 406 engines. When the 427 became available in '63, they all appeared with cross-bolts.

The subject of Clambake comes up a bunch on FE pages, for obvious reasons  ;D. I think it’s just hard to see the cross bolts on the black block. Definitely a 427 LR intake. If I remember, in the scenes of the boat race it has some tall spacers under the carbs, they’re not on it in the shop scenes. Also if I remember correctly, I think people have commented the boat was well known on the West coast, appeared in magazines, etc. I just happened to take some pictures some years back when the movie was on.

I watched the 427 engine part of the movie again. The side of the block is clearly visible. It is not as side oiler block - and not cross bolted. Perhaps even a 390 movie production prop.
The boat itself was raced with a 427 FE. I have read the Rawhide boat had a 427 side oiler engine.

Still very cool.

Depending on when that movie came out,it could have been a a late 406 some of them were built with the dual quad with long exhaust manifolds and not necessarily crossbolted. If the movie was released in 64,it could have been filmed in late 62 early 63.The black paint, adjustable valvetrain and what appears to be the C2AE balancer on the front would support a HP engine.

LOL, very true. I didn't notice his clean hands.
Mine usually require several bandages on knuckles and fingers when spending time on the Galaxie not to mention hard to get rid of grit under fingernails.
All worth it though.

Happy July 4 tomorrow! (despite Bidan)
