Will an FE drop in a 72 Mustang ??
« on: May 08, 2021, 11:33:24 PM »
Also, article states ... "they gained about 800 pounds"

Is this over the first Mustangs or ??

............................................

Developed under the watch of S. "Bunkie" Knudsen, Mustang evolved "from speed and power" to the growing consumer demand for bigger and heavier "luxury" type designs.[32] "The result was the styling misadventures of 1971–73 ...the Mustang grew fat and lazy,"[32] "Ford was out of the go-fast business almost entirely by 1971."[33] "This was the last major restyling of the first-generation Mustang."[34] "The cars grew in every dimension except height, and they gained about 800 pounds (363 kg)."[34] "The restyling also sought to create the illusion that the cars were even larger."[34] The 1971 Mustang was nearly 3 inches (76 mm) wider than the 1970, its front and rear track was also widened by 3 inches (76 mm), and its size was most evident in the SportsRoof models with its nearly flat rear roofline[35] and cramped interior with poor visibility for the driver.[36] Performance decreased with sales continuing to decrease[37] as consumers switched to the smaller Pintos and Mavericks. A displeased Iacocca summed up later: "The Mustang market never left us, we left it."[38]

Yes, that would be over the first year Mustang.   Here is a list of curb weights for each Mustang body through the years.  https://www.cjponyparts.com/resources/mustang-curb-weights

Years ago, a guy I knew swapped a 428 FE into a 72 Mustang. Not sure what motor mounts he used, (66-69 Fairlane/Torino look possibly similar), but it fit nicely, and the 71-3s have wider engine compartments, and a better integral power steering system. Of course they do not look as nice as a 67 thru 70.....
1978 Fairmont,FE 427 with 428 crank, 4 speed Jerico best of 9.972@132.54MPH 1.29 60 foot
1985 Mustang HB 331 SB Ford, 4 speed Jerico, best of 10.29@128 MPH 1.40 60 foot.
1974 F350 race car hauler 390 NP435 4 speed
1959 Ford Meteor 2 dr sedan. 428 Cobra Jet, 4 speed Toploader. 12.54@ 108 MPH

Me and my pals always called them the "big ugly Mustangs".

Although a Boss 351 or a 429CJ version ran pretty well...they're still big 'n ugly. The Mustang was on a long down hill slide by then. The rebadged Pinto "Mustang II" took it farther down the abyss.

I believe it was Larry Shinoda that called them the Air Craft Carrier Mustang.

On the 71-3 Mustang fastbacks, looking thru the almost flat rear glass was quite a challange, much worse than my 69 & 70 Mach 1s, or my 69 Cobra fastbacks. And with the wider body, tall dashboard , and low seating position, seeing the front and sides of the car was also a chore. Back in 76, I test drove several different cars at a local performance car lot, including a 71 Mach 1 351C 4 barrel 4 speed. Compared to the 70 Mustang Sportsroof (351C 4 barrel with Shaker), that I ended up buying (for $2100. , it was great time for buying late model cars!), that 71 felt like I was going to be clipping parked cars on both sides of the street at the same time, it seemed so wise. And looking out the rear view mirror was like looking thru a mail slot.

This ‘71 Mustang with a swapped FE turned up on Facebook today. Here’s an engine bay picture so you can see how it looks.
