I watched the new Street Outlaws tonight.
« on: May 08, 2021, 11:29:36 PM »
I got back from working on some fun cars all day, took a shower, made a late supper and plopped down in front of the TV....Hmmmm, what to watch, nope, nope, nope....a brand new Street Outlaws? I dunno, I have grown tired of this show for what it has become, but it has been quite a long time since I watched any, like three years or so....Lets try it.

Ohh, a new name "Americas List", boy are they getting fancy.
As I watched this hour long episode it became painfully clear there is nothing resembling street legal in the cars being raced.

The "street" is almost literally a track, with a few legal definitions keeping the street portion alive.
They were racing on a new section of concrete road...you could watch the diverted traffic driving by on the opposing lanes.
Full lighting.
Full drag trailer parking on both sides of the road.
Full traction compound prep for a large portion of the strip.
Full chassis race cars with ZERO street legal equipment, except for some lights.

The cars are fast for sure, but this barely resembles the show it once was and really does not appeal to me any longer because it is not about street racing as much as full tilt pro car drag racing done on a prepped, closed, drag strip that just happens to be a street.

They only need a couple things to make this a drag strip in all aspects...guardrails, and a tree.
Everything else about this show is basically Pro Mod drag racing.

What do you guys think of Street Outlaws as it currently exists in 2021?

Didn't watch it back when, still don't.  Over glorified drama queens.  I get it, it's about what the directors want, but still.  I have no need for it.

I do watch a few channels on youtube, like 1320 Videos.  They actually go out to places and video more realistic "street racing".  They don't do "director installed drama".  Just talk to racers and show racing.   Much more down to earth true "reality".  Street Racing Channel is another I watch.  They are just south of me and show a lot of racing footage from them going to places and racing.  The shop I use built the motor for "Molly's" mustang.

Two of the Street outlaws came to local track a couple years ago.  I went down to watch some of the local buddies run in this circus show.  The two TV show cars just sat there all day on jackstands while the locals made test passes.  I did see one of the "drama cars" literally just drive down the track.  OH YEA....exciting.  ::)  It just proved that they will never get a 2000+ hp "pro mod" car down Magnolia drag strip!  I left before any of the actual racing started.

The fake drama is what really drives me away from this show.
For instance, the new format of "America's List" imposes all these convoluted "rules" about how you can be called out, or how you can call someone out.

They kept going on and on about how much trouble this will cause, how difficult it is to understand and navigate, and how the OKC guys know how to run the list giving them an advantage.....Really?
Your premise for racing drama is to build a specifically convoluted, hard to understand, set of rules regarding how you will get your next race?

What was is wrong and hard about asking the next guy in line for a race?

They even went so far as to have "JJ Da Boss" and "Preacious" run away from the track, into the woods, trying to hide from Mike Murillo's call out to JJ. The funny part is JJ and Precious literally fell into the construction ditch during this drama BS session.
While I do not like to see people get hurt, there is a bit of ironic justice to being honestly hurt while trying to play out fake drama.

I will say they did NOT have any of the fake, almost fight, BS drama last night...and for that I am very grateful.
This tough guy act, as begun with the Fast and the Furious, has really changed the street racing scene around here.

While there always seems to be at least one punchy person in the crowd, it was NOT the norm around here for a long, long time.
Plans are made for the place to race.
Make your way to the spot...shaking the trouble makers if you can.
Talk, BS, catch up, figure out the races...race, rinse, repeat.

Then The Fast and Furious movie came out and suddenly EVERYONE is a tough guy.
NOBODY races for anything less than $1,000...even in their 17.50 stock Civic with a fart can.
The endless bitching, bad mouthing, nonsense talk and posturing prior to ANY race.
The self important "racers" prancing and parading around as if they are the reason everyone is there tonight.....like Street Outlaws showcases most of the time.

As much as I did not like last nights show, for many detailed reasons, I was very happy to see they did not interject any of the fighty, tough guy, BS.

While this show has not been about pure street racing in a long, long time...or maybe even ever, in it's current guise it is really a sanctioned Pro Mod drag race taking place on a "street" only by the purest definition of the word street.
Pretty soon you will see sponsor logos on the road surface, the back of city street signs, and strategically placed billboards that just happen to be in the camera shot in the background.

Anyway, thanks for the replys so far.
I am not searching for any specific answer.
I just want to hear your reasons for liking, or disliking, the show.

I was a spectator to much of the original Chicago based racing from the 90's. So paid attention for the earlier shows but lost interest rather quickly. Another local guy has a decent YouTube channel with some neat footage/history. His old footage is still just after my time though. Enjoy!

I tried to watch it a few times early on but I had to turn the sound off because very quickly I tired of the bs spewed out and every third word being bleeped out.  ::)

to me,the street racing was on a closed street with genset lighting trailers and almost for sure had permits from the local city or county for filming a "drag race" event.so not the real street racing, but at least its safer for the locals.

A DVR comes in handy with all the bs today. Seems 99% of what is on television is fake anymore, so set your DVR to record and only watch what you want, when you want.

It's just "no prep" (with some prep) on a non-sanctioned track likely built as much for filming as for racing.

I watched the first episode so many years back.  I know how long it takes to load a race car in a trailer and drive off.  "Here comes the police" - moving at what must have been 5 MPH from 10 miles away because everyone got loaded, tied down and "nothing to see here!" well before the cops actually arrived.  Yea, that was reality TV.  As time went on, they just dropped a lot of the "we're looking for a place to street race" junk and focused on the people/cars.

Yes - the DVR is king for this, like watching Oak Island.  Fast forward past the "negotiating" and anything Farm Truck/Asian does and watch the racing.

I ditched my Dish and bought a Roku. Now all I spend is $6 bucks a month for Discovery plus. You can watch every episode of every show on any of their channels when ever you want. Not a fan of S.O. though. In the beginning I liked Big Chief only because he did run a Poncho engine in his Pontiac. And the Farm truck and Asian were entertaining, but so was Ass Monkey in the beginning. They had Sue and Aaron to keep my interest.

The evolution of these $$$$$ driven shows had made what they do VERY dangerous. Chief , Doc , Lutz ( most recently) JJ , and several others have crashed and walked away. WHY they risk their lives on the street is beyond me so it HAS to be the money they are paid. "Track" racing is dangerous enough at this level of performance. What is going to happen when one of them dies????
