A little more technical than we normally get into, but they had a bigger budget than most engine builders.

Obviously the engineers at the big-oil companies have a stake in the results but they say "buy the oil intended for the job" and skip the additives. Had a friend that owned a solvent and oil business with the weighted bearing test rig that could leave the bearing surfaces scored and smoking and no question his additive of choice {Power Up} was really impressive at increasing the load carrying capacity of any oil you selected to "Power Up". But then you hear some of those additives are chlorine based (rub a dilute chlorine mix between your fingers--it's slick) .  Remember the shysters draining the oil out of cars and later when they were selling wax's toughness by lighting the surface of a R/R's hood on fire with a flammable fluid   ?
