In 2009 I rebuilt the 428 engine in my '66 Galaxie. I replaced the stock flywheel with a 390/427 Fidanza flywheel that was balanced to work with my 428.
I assembled the engine and added the flywheel, clutch disk, pressure place, and bell housing and installed the engine. I started it several times but only got about 200 miles on it when the flywheel ring gear lost several teeth. I stored the car.
Friday, I start to fix this problem. Removed the shifter, slid the transmission back out of the way, unbolted the pressure plate and it wouldn't come out. On Sunday night I removed the bracket for the throw out bearing fork and I was able to pry the pressure plate and clutch disc out of the bell housing.
Measured the clutch disc and pressure plate thickness and they were similar to another set I had. Measured the flywheel and it's about 0.050 inch thicker that the old stock cast iron one and it's also about 10 pound heavier.
Anybody else have a problem like this?
I guess I going to have the flywheel surfaced to remove at least 0.060 or maybe even 0.125 of an inch.
Any other suggestions for a solution?
