« on: April 07, 2012, 12:05:40 PM »
has anyone tried using a thermactor air pump (polution pump) in a cheap crankcase evacation system? ie. using the pump to suck on the crankcase rather than its designed purpose of blowing into the exhaust ports? just thinking...

If I recall correctly GZ Motorsports builds their vacuum pumps starting with a Thermactor pump.  www.gzmotorsports.com

I've never tried using a stock pump but it might work...

When vac pumps started to become the rage some years ago I read an article about stock   Thermactor pumps. IIRC, they do work up to a point but a few racers said don't bother with an OEM unit. They didn't generate enough of a vacuum to do much and w/o a way to tighten the internal clearances one was left at the mercy of whatever clearances a specific pump had when installed.

Now, maybe those electric leaf blowers the ricer crowd claims can supercharge your engine might be a better bet.... ::)

yeah, a few years back I experimented with a power brake vacuum pump from a desiel school bus that I plumbed into the road draft tube on my 67. made about a tenth and 2-3 mph improvement if I remember. however the pump seized after a few passes and then I sold that car and did not pursue the idea anymore, until now...

The trouble with the leaf blower approach is that it requires such a long extension cord!

The OE vacuum pumps work.  That's what they used for several years until the aftermarket ones became available.  There was a higher volume 460 application that was pretty popular.  Biggest problem was that they did not last long - they were intended to pump clean air and the soot & oil mist coming out of the crankcase was pretty hard on the internal parts.
