Tri-Power Intake
« on: May 08, 2012, 05:39:24 PM »
Guys,
My buddy has a 64 Galaxie XL w/390 4sp. We just got back from this old man's barn where we heard there was some FE parts for sale. We ended up buying a FE 3 duce intake with correct 2436/37 Holly carbs and linkage. The old man was hard to deal with but we managed to get it for $400.00. The carbs he said had been rebuilt by a professional but never used afterward. My buddy is going to put the intake on his 300hp 390.
My question is. How do you limit the amount of flow on a setup like that. There's no way in h__ that 390 would take 1010 cfm at full throttle I wouldn't think. Surely he's not the only one that wanted to put this intake a carb setup on a low horse 390 for looks. What would you do to make this combination more streetable. Thanks, Jim
EDIT:   Sorry, should have researched it first. They flow 2V carbs differently. You end up dividing the total by 1.4 to get the usable CFM and that would be 728.

I'm running the 6V intake on my 390, and I have not had any problems with the intake being over carburettored. My 390 heads have been opened up a little and I'm using a Comp 270S cam, but otherwise it is set up like a factory 6V 390. Drives fine in a 63 4 speed Galaxie.

You can always jet too much carb down to what you need...pretty impossible to go the other direction though.   :D  I think you'd be fine.
