FE Technical Forum / Re: 406 Heads more info

The letter I is omitted in the letter to month sequence because it could be confused as a 1. That throws the sequence off by 1 month after that letter.

I doesn't even have to be a grade 8 bolt. A grade 5 will work just fine, especially with the extra clamping force of the 20 pitch thread.

We'll need more info on deck clearance, how many cc on the piston dish and actual head cc for a actual CR but, if the 406 heads have 64cc and your C1's have 74cc, then that should raise the CR almost 1 full point.

Nowadays, I try to do minimum bore and spend the money on a piston.  If that really is a thick block after sonic checking, I'd stop at 4.05 and build a snotty 390 or 437 at the biggest.

Ross, what do you do with CJ blocks. Since they have the same cores as the FT?

When the FE car engine was introduce, it had a minimum cylinder wall thickness spec of .170 and recommend a max overbore of .060, cutting that down to .140.

I've studied wet sleeve engines and many of them have a .125 wall thickness so, that falls into the area that some (including me) recommend as a min wall thickness when boring a engine. That said, Jay has a dyno mule 427 block, that .060 or a bit under, in places.

The Ford FT block, that came out in '64, is a different matter, they are made with much thicker cores. I don't have the spec but, the CJ block has similar cores. It's my belief that that's where the CJ block was derived.

As I remember, my block is a '72. I think they started the ribs close to '71.

With good sonic map readings, you should be good to at least 4.13.

I have a late 330 block, with side ribs. I did the same test and found that there was a fairly big difference, between the top of the cylinder and the bottom.

The bottom (from memory of 3 years ago) was 3/16, while the top, under the deck, was 9/32. Also, my block doesn't have the third rib in the skirt.

My suggestion would be to just bite the bullet and put that 390 in there.

The CI intakes take a lot just to get them off. I don't but, at 80 lb, a lot of people use a cherry picker just to get them off and on.

First thing is that they never put a 360 in a T-bird so, if it's out of a '65 T-Bird, it should be a 390.

I was a mechanic in the '60's when the steel shim was factory and they worked well. The only issue was with a engine that severely over heated and they require a re-torque after a heat cycle. The HP gaskets are even better, as they have a doubled over fire ring on them. Post a picture a we can tell if it's a HP gasket.

Yes, it will help the engine by, reducing the squish by .010 - .020.

If it's a 390, the 735 cfm carb may show a improvement, worth a try.

Let me point something out that many that don't remember world history, may not understand.

Do any of you remember the "Opium Wars" of the 1800's? Basically, the British tried to addict the Chinese, using Opium, from India, to control their trade with them and that is what the Chinese are doing to us today. Not only with drugs, like fentanyl, that destroy people and family's but, with cheap goods, that destroy our work force and our ability to make anything here.

Our big corporations and many small businesses, are just like those Opium addicted Chinese workers and businessmen but, their (our) Opium is profits. Kinda like the old saying "What comes around, goes around". We need to get out heads out of our a$$ and anyone that can buy American should and must, do so.

Bill was almost unbeatable after Ernie and a head porter (I can't recall his name) got together and figured out the Cleveland head.

Made me proud that my name is also Elliott. No relation, of course but, my brother always referred to him as "Uncle Bill" :)

Let me put one more thing out there, especially regarding rods:

If you don't buy the American product, there is no incentive for American company's to make make one and if you don't request additional products, there will never be any options made, to any base product that might still be made in the good old USA.

Think about it.

on other forums will be quick to talk about how great certain South Korean products are.

I never said anything about how "great" they were, just that, at the time, they were the best source available! PLUS, they are not made in China!!! Like the products that you and Ross put in engines.

I have never promoted anything made in China!

Ross, you will tell people to hit the road because they want to use the Pro Maxx head that cost $1000 less than the TFS and say you "have" to use the Molnar rod because it cost $400 more than a American one?

I don't think many people realize the Molnar rod is made in China, in part, at least, because both of you use them and promote them but, say you won't use Chinese stuff.

BTW, besides Crower still making rods, Carillo and Oliver still make rods. What company hasn't copied the H beam Carrilo rods?

If you want to keep American rod manufactures in business , those are the rods that should be in quality builds.

So Brent, Before you speak for me, I would suggest that you reference the actual the thread you speak of or, give a direct quote from it! That is NOT what I said, at all. As a matter of FACT, I did not say anything about how great ANYTHING was!

Prove me wrong or apologize.
