Member Projects / 66 LTD transmission Questions
« on: March 22, 2021, 02:02:26 PM »
Hi guys. I am working an putting together the 445 for my 66LTD and have two transmission questions. Car has a C6. One is if I need to find a different kick down rod going from the stock 4v intake to a CJ intake? And two, does anyone know of a transmission shop in the twin citys Minnesota area? She still shifted good but it leaks from every conceivable opening in the trans.

Not sure about head flow numbers, but its 9.66:1 compression. CJ 2.09 1.65 valves Isky 805-DO springs. I belive I asked him to flow the heads when I checked the block work but havent heard back yet.

Hi all. About to get my block, heads, and rotating assembly from the machine shop. Ive got a 66 LTD 4 door that is a road trip machine for myself and up to 6 of my freinds. Its going to be a 445 with home ported C6AE-R heads and a CJ intake. Auto, power brakes, power steering, stock converter, and 2.89 gears. Get to 80-90 fast and stay there till you pull over for gas. I was thing something like a CJ "copy" cam such as a howards   https://www.howardscams.com/hydraulic-flat-tappet-american-muscle-camshaft-1963-1977-ford-352-428-1100-4800-howards-cams-257711   described as a copy of the C6OZ-6250-B. The guy at the machine shop (who I belive to be very reputable) was thinking a comp cams 33-308-4 224/230 at 50 .551/.539 110deg lobe seperation. Any thoughts from the comunity?

Thanks for the replies. I will have to try Prior Lake. I went to the Jordan city office and they were not willing to do it at that time due to how backed up they were. They also said that the state is wanting to stop doing the vintage collector plates and collector plates generally. I would guess that would be due to the annual wheelage tax on standard plates.

Would anyone know if those manifolds would fit a 66 Galaxie?

I have a Z code 66 LTD that is getting tired. So I am working on gathering goodies to build the new engine, and freshen up the car from a mechanical standpoint generally. Car is already C6 with 2.80 gears. I like stuff that is mostly factory, and i like to have geeky speed parts. I am always disapointed when someone opens the hood and it looks like the whole summit catalouge is under there.

So long story short I want to build either a PI configured engine with the shorty headers of a CJ with the CJ maifolds. With taxi breaks dog dish poverty caps, and blackwall firestones.

I have a CJ intake. So I have that for trade if someone has some of that other stuff and needs one of those.

Does anyone know if the police radiators were different? Kinda dont want to put a aluminum one in there if i dont have to.

As far as engine goes what I want to do is build a 445 CJ engine. I really want to flip open the hood and have it look like a factory CJ install / someone swapped one in from a rolled car in 1970 or so. I figure roughly 400 horse is plenty to wrap yourself around a tree with. A "B" ish cam will play nice with power steering and brakes. The 2.80 gears that are so nice for cruising around 90 should play nice with that cam as well. The runs good but sorta suspect 390 currently residing under the hood should give good service residing under the hood of the 75 F250.

As some may recall I got a 1 owner Z code 66 LTD a few months back. Now with spring and tax returns on the way I am plotting what to do first for improvements. My current thoughts are to do a hotchkis suspension first while they are available. Brakes and wheels are proving to be a little bit of a conundrum at the moment. Should I bother with "big" brakes or will four corner stock wheel disk be enough for something that will just get daily type use? All the wheel options for big brake clearance would look terrible on a 4 door. Nobody seems to make a 16 or 17 that a stock poverty cap would go on.

See the video for details. A brief synopsis would be that I am trying to figure out a good way to clean the dirt out of the frame rails and do some rust prevention. I also am a bit stumped by the tie rods and ball joints not having grease Zerk's on them. I thought non serviceable sealed parts were some newfangled thing. The good news is that the idle suddenly became perfect this morning so I am putting off kitting the carb for the time being. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txA8V-rOgRk  . A link to a video with a more thorogh explination seems to be a little less unwieldy than uploading pictures that wind up being huge and slow to load.

Every time the 75 F250 dies I go looking around to see whats available for something dirfferent. This time I ran across a local 66 LTD that was too good to pass on. I might turn around and sell it in a year or two but it will be fun to cruise around in in the meantime. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uXOsif4z5U

Looking at a car that's for sale in my area. Just wondering what all the Z code 390 had going on. Its factory C6 has a solid frame and decent interior so I think its a buy.

If you are willing to go way out in the weeds you can run dual IMPCO 250 propane mixers on holley baseplates directly on any edlebrock dual quad manifold. Propane is around 112 octane and the mixers like to run below 3 inches of vacume across the venturis. Lets you run a real wild engine with good street manners. Tanks and convienient filling are another matter however.

been thinking of getting one of these   https://www.transmissionadapters.com/ford_fe.htm   guys kits to put a ZF5 behind the someday 445 in my 75 250. Gas geared ZF5s have 5.72 syncro first 2.94 2nd and a .76 over. Should be perfect with 4.10s, maybe go 4.30s.
