Title: 66 Fairlane 427 engine mounts
Post by: Jb427 on December 26, 2020, 07:07:12 PM
Looking for a good option engine mount for a 66 fairlane with a bbm 427 block I don't want it to be solid mounted.
do the std 390 3 piece fairlane mounts fit a bbm 427 block i may be missing some thing i can not get the holes to line up?

Try switching them from side to side, the fairlane mounts clock on the block kind of funny when you get them bolted on they look like they're on crooked, also check to see if some rubber is bonded into the bolt holes, some of the aftermarket mounts can look like the they spilled a bucket of rubber on them, and some of the factory insulators aren't much better.

Here is a pic. i was looking for non stock options but i also did not want to be rattled to death with solid mounts engine should have 600+ hp maybe even closer to 700
semi solid mounts look ok but i am not sure if i will still have probs http://motormountscomponents.name/ford_fairlane_mercury_cyclone_comet_gt_390_427_428_cj_scj_racing_motor_mounts_fe_2.htm

On a factory 427 SO block, the casting has the left bottom motor mount hole moved upward so that it doesn't interfere with the side oil passage. The stock FE location would penetrate right through the passage. You can simply elongate the hole in the motor plate to get the bolt to pass through. I did that with the stock mounts when I installed a 427 SO block in my Mach 1. I use a limiter on the driver side from the head to the frame and have never had a problem, even with dragstrip launches with a 4 spd.

I have those in my 67 Fairlane along with a poly transmission crossmember mount. They come with a washer pack so that you may choose moving the engine forward/rearward slightly.  They are stiff but not solid. I think they were $279.00 when I bought them.

Perhaps there is another vendor for those other than on eBay?

So did the 66-67 427 fairlanes use a different insulator or a completely different mount setup?I do like the looks of the mount setup fairlaniac has posted, does that use bushing in it or is it solid mount?Does it work with manifolds and headers that work with the stock mount setup?

I think the insulator was different for 427s, but nobody reproduces that specific part.  As was stated before, the 390 mount can be easily redrilled to fit the 427 SO pattern.

The aftermarket mount has an insulator that absorbs some vibration, and is not solid.  I have that setup on my street car and find it to be a big improvement over the stock parts.

Yes, I like them a lot. I did have to make a 1/4” thick shim on the driver side to level it out.

I have the same ones on mine. They are a polyurethane bushing with a steel sleeve through the center. Yes, they work with headers/manifolds as the stock ones would, only these seem to have a little better clearance than stock ones. I don't worry about a torque strap with these, because I don't think my junk is strong enough to move 'em.

Doug, do you know if there was something out of alignment that yours needed the shim? Mine is not a 427, but I didn't need any shimming on mine to sit level. Just curious.

Looking at both brackets you could tell they were not "jigged" before welding. One had a slight angle in the pieces welded which I think attributed to the out of level issue. Going from one mount eyelet to another at 1 degree created a 1/4" variance. It was an easy fix and I had no concern.

Okay. I figured there was some reason. Glad you had an easy fix. I sat mine together on the work bench and eyeballed them. They looked pretty symmetrical, so I figured they would line up fine.

That is a super nice mount setup and it is a captured design to boot,no need for a strap or limiter with those. My experience with the stock setup has been that it tends to loosen up and allow a lot of movement. The 64-66 T-bird uses a similar design mount setup but I don't think it was as demanding as the Fairlane engines.

Seems to be all good things to say about these i am surprised more venders don't carry these.
If any of the venders here that are willing to ship outside the USA can get me a set of these PM me.
Thank you everyone for the info.

I recently bought a set of those for my Fairlane. He jigs the driver side for the different hole spacing and shape on the different blocks.
Those deals are expensive but they’re damn nice.

Pretty simple to just file that hole upwards till the bolt fits.

I have always liked that design, how much do they vibrate?

I don't think they are that bad. I have a poly trans mount as well. Mine is a little high strung and has a noticeable exhaust, so I may not be the person to give a true review. I also have a high tolerance to what may be considered streetable. Maybe someone else will add their experience.

I'm with Nightmist66, not bad but I like to feel what is going on. If you wish for this kind of a ride https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdLxM_5_bXo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdLxM_5_bXo) you probably don't want to use them.

LOL, that stuff wouldn't last 2 seconds with 90% of the people on this forum.  ;D

The OP was curious about how much shake there might be with the engine mounts described in this thread. This video is of an older 427,(575 hp), in my 67.

I have those on my 68 Montego MX S code Auto (stock except for CJ intake).  Id say there is a little bit more vibration, but not much.  I do feel that the engine feels more responsive, I felt that it was because the poly mounts didnt expand or compress like the factory rubber mounts do.
