I have a problem. I have a "thing" for ring and pinions.
I have a 3.00, 3.07, 3.13, 3.15, 3.25, 3.33, 3.64, 3.75, 3.82, 3.89, 4.11, 4.22, and 4.33 gears.
I am fascinated by them in perhaps an unhealthy way? I like having the perfect gear ratio for starters. Second, I am fascinated by the differences in them. The ones with more teeth have straighter gears which I think are more efficient. And the pinion is especially affected by this. The pinions with fewer teeth have a large "swirl" to them as the fewer teeth still have to encompass 360 degrees. I think that makes them less efficient? And the pinion itself is physically smaller which has to affect strength at some point.
My 3.13 gear has 47 teeth on the ring and 15 teeth on the pinion. My best one in that respect.
My worst might be my 3.89 gear with 35 teeth on the ring and 9 on the pinion. Numerically higher ratios get even worse. Some only have 6 or 7 teeth on the pinion.
Can anybody help me?

Also, some of my ring and pinions are REM polished which is supposed to reduce friction and temperatures. And some of them are lightened by removing "extra" material on the ring. Who knew they could be so fascinating?

I don't see anything wrong with you. ;D

Thanks, man!

You are sick. When you are put into an Old Farts Home (next couple months), you will be fondling gears in amazement, much like wide-eyed Hillary mesmerized by the overhead lights. And you worry about pinions that have 6 or 7 teeth? That's more teeth than I have in my whole mouth.
Things could be worse. You could be addicted to...uh...hmmm. OK, never mind, things can't be worse. You are screwed. :(

I named my 3.13 ring gear, "my precious". Don't be jealous. You can't have it!!!!

Ah. A Gear Gollum. It's worse than I thought.
Have never seen that ratio, but I know the roundy-rounders have every combo possible. There is a set of 2.47's in a parts car here, slated for my '72 N-code Gran Sport with 521 Blue Thunder 8V. I have NOS 160 MPH speedo in box. I'll race you to Hell.

I am imagining shifting into 2nd at 80 mph and into 3rd at 130 mph. Yeah, you'll get there first. Plus, cruising with "regular" traffic at 2000 rpm! Overdrive? HELL no!

Hold on a sec.....your 2.47 gear has 47 ring gear teeth and 19(!) pinion gear teeth? I see what you're doing now.

I have no idea about tooth count on the 2.47's. Still in car. '79 Ranchero GT with 351M. I got the car for 100 bucks with dead C6. Door tag says 2.47. If you saw what I "did" there, let me in on it. ;)

Hoping your hunting/nonhunting and partial non hunting needs are met

The 2.47 gear has more ring teeth and more pinion teeth than any other Ford 9 inch gear, as far as I know.

I hope you can hewp me mister game warden. I've been towd I can shoot wabbits, mongooses, pigeons, dirty skunks and ducks. Can you teww me what season it weawwy is??!!

Pinion envy, who knew? I'm a 3:89 guy myself. Maybe because I have a soft spot for Ponchos. While I don't have a rear gear fetish, I do like the smell of well used gear oil & stale gasoline. Goes back to my childhood memory of exploring the neighborhood junk yard.

Hey, it's 2018 and if I like big pinions, no one can stop me!

Ya' know pinions are like butt holes.......... 8)

I don’t see a 3.70 on the list ? What’s wrong with you? Lol . You have more than me

I KNOW! No 3.70 and no 3.50! It's going to drive me crazy! :)

19 teeth on that pinion? Is that Felony's 2.47 pinion gear? If so, his '72 Gran Sport must be the size of a star ship and his 521 must be measured in cubic feet!

While you were taking drugs first thing in the morning (not that there's anything wrong with that), I was being nagged by the Ghost of Parts Purchases Past about my speedometer info. So I dragged it out of the vault to verify. Yep, drug abuse can skew memory. Who knew? This a 140-mph police unit stamped "Calibration Certified" in the face, with a Dec 20, '72 date stamp on back. Also a "J"; maybe a revision or assembly code number. It is not NOS, showing 50,583 miles. I'm sure I have another speedo that is NOS in the vault, but it is not this model.
Both the '72 N-code 429 Torino GS and the '73 N-code Montego GT have 2.79 gears from the factory. The '79 Ranchero GT really does have 2.47's, people. Please check the bottom of the first column here: https://www.supermotors.net/registry/media/419687_1 Note also that there is a 2.26 ratio option (G-code). That should feed you pinion strokers for days to come.
We've all seen these "street race" videos that are actually highway blasts from a 60 mph roll. I gotta imagine how a 500+ incher with these type of ratios would stack up in that scenario. Anyone here have a freeway flyer?
-
Well, I suppose this would be cheating but my 63 Galaxie with 3.00 gear and .64 OD TKO 600 should do about 219 at 5200 RPM according to the TREMEC “Tool Box” calculator. FElony would have to share a pretty large dose of his drug stash before I would have the courage to validate that. Probably need medium dose just to try 4th gear.
I have kind of grown to like the 2000 RPM at 80 and the occasional 18 MPG. Dropping it down a gear, or two, still makes it fun to drive on the street.
-
OH come on. Give it up for the team. I mean, forum. Tremec doesn't account for the '63 having the aerodynamic drag of the Hoover Dam. You should be plenty safe at 180. Just make sure you stream the video during just in case, well, you get a flat at 175.

Just so you know; I take a shot of JD Black before I read your response to any of my posts. Just to steel my nerves. So thanks for taking it easy on me. …..please don't post 10 times in quick succession...….a man's got to know his limitations.

I think 2.26:1 is 43 ring teeth with 19 pinion teeth?
I had never heard of that one.

I owned a 79 Mercury Zephyr(302 auto), that came with 2.26 gears, and several others with 2.47s, but they had the 7 1/2" diff. I have seen 2.47s for a 9 inch in Lincoln Versailles, but never 2.26s. Obviously not a "Drag Pack" option!
