FE Technical Forum / Re: Rod Bolt Question

Thanks very much for your opinion, especially from an engineering perspective. I just happen to have a set of big bolt rods reconditioned with ARP bolts. I’ll put them to good use!

« on: November 18, 2022, 12:57:55 PM »
Which combination of standard FE rods with ARP rod bolts is stronger, 13/32” or 3/8”? I ask because I thought I once heard the smaller high tensile bolt is stronger than oem, and leaves more meat in the rods creating a better stronger combination.

Thanks all,
Jim

I've been waiting since August for a set of sideoiler cam bearings. 🤦‍♂️

PM me I might be able to help out.

Top oilers/center oilers have grooves in the block behind the cam bearings.   Side oilers don't.   So, if you use an F24 bearing in a 352/390/428/427CO block, you'll just have two entry points of oil to the camshaft through the bearing.

If you use an F33 bearing in a side oiler, you will need to oil through the pushrods, because the secondary holes in bearings 2 & 4 which oil the heads will not be there.

Thank you Brent for your explanation on the difference in these cam bearings, I really appreciate it!
BTW, love your YouTube videos. Very informative!

I’m wondering what the recommended Dura-Bond cam bearing is in a center oilier 390 with a Comp 270s cam the F-24 which by application is side oiler, or the F-33 which is recommended for all other FE’s. I ask because Barry sent the F-24 set for a center oilier I was building. Just want to ensure I’m not missing something here.

Not much to report as of lately. Still waiting for chrome platers to get bumpers and bumper guards done. They were up front with long wait due to workload. Hopefully they’ll be done as it cools off in Phoeinx. Looking forward to putting some miles on this beast!

Fantastic build! Look forward to following your progress. Best of luck on the air cleaner lid, I’ve only seen 1 of these in the past 30 years. Hopefully someone will come up with one for this well deserving project!

Had a great weekend. Started right up, ran the cam in for 20 minutes. running a Comp Cams 270s recommended by Jay. very nice idle, but pulls hard when those end carburetors open. Funny thing happened, the brand new fuel pump failed. luckily it failed in the driveway. no biggie, I had others in stock. now just waiting for bumpers to come back from chrome platers and for it to not be 115 degrees here in sunny Phoenix. looking forward to getting engine broken in and having fun with it!

Hi all, Jay tells me I’ve been away for 3116 days! Glad to be active here again. Short story is I’ve been working on my ‘64 P code for 12 years and my ‘63 Q code for 10 years. COVID hit and I went into overdrive and began knocking them out.

Presently I’m Installing a stroker motor in the P code car. Started life as a 391 industrial pump engine. Had 428 core, bored 4.130” 4.25”stroker kit from Barry. Now cross bolted, C3AE-J heads 270s cam and tri-power. Should make great torque and be well behaved.

Hope to fire it this weekend!

Hi Daniel, that’s too bad about the ’66, but a really neat story about how the Torino came to you. It’s really great to hear about someone your age with interest in these cars. I’ve earned a living in one fashion or another from vehicle repair since I was 14 years old. I’m a lot older that that now. Nothing wrong with getting new blood interested in this old iron. Welcome to the forum!

I really appreciate the responses guys. I’d seen the mud engine thread while searching and took a lot of info and interest in reading. A really great thread!

Heo, We’ll have to share details about our PI cars.

Some of the images in the search posted are good, and ones that came up in searches I’d done. Others are one’s I’d not seen before, so more good reading.

I guess what I’m hoping for, is someone that ported C4AE-G heads, who had flowed them, and can point out where and what kind of basic work was done with tangible results. Most of the posts and images out there give no real “do this, here, and this will be the result” or conversely, “don’t dare do this, or you’ll negatively effect flow / port”.

Whatever the case, I really appreciate the responses and welcome any other input.

Thanks!

FE Technical Forum / Help with C4AEG Head Cleanup
« on: October 06, 2013, 11:18:58 AM »
Hi Everyone, as posted in my intro thread I’m doing an engine for my ’64 PI Galaxie. It’ll be a stock appearing mill with tri-power. It’ll be 456ci (4.25 stroke 4.18 bore) with factory PI shortys. The original PI engine is safely set aside on a stand and will remain safe and sound, and I’ll have fun with this mill installed.

I have a donor set of C4AE-G heads that among many applications was also used on PI engines. For the sake of stock appearance, I’ll be using these on this engine. I’ve extensively searched this, and other forums as well as the internet and found some info on porting, but nearly no images at all. I’m really hoping someone might have some images they could share to point me in the right direction. I’m all set, with a newly acquired Bosch electric die grinder, variable power supply, and a very open ear, eye, and mind. I have no delusions of radical porting, just CJ valve treatment and good cleanup.

Images, tips, and experiences much appreciated! Thanks everyone.

If it were oil fouling the plugs, from everything you’ve already said you’ve done, I’d say check the heat riser crossover to ensure it’s not rotted under the splash pan on the bottom of the manifold, but doesn’t seem as though it’s oil from what you’ve said. Just another thought though.

Have you tried shutting down the end carb butterflies till they are close to seat, not too close so they stick and then close down the end carb idle circuits. Sounds like rich at idle, that’s a starting point. Really suspicious of powervalve though. Another trick is to isolate the center carb by plating the end spots and concentrate on the center. If it suddenly runs fine, then it’s one of the end carbs. If not, then concentrate on the middle carb. BTW, nice engine build!
