FE Technical Forum / Spark plug thread repair question
« on: January 04, 2024, 08:09:07 PM »

I am not familiar with this style thread repair. Was there a particular company that offered this repair? Seems like the original thread would have to be totally wiped and even then why would you go through the difficulty?

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Galaxie shocks from Bud's
« on: January 01, 2023, 09:38:13 PM »
Bud's Classic Car up in Conn. (formerly Greg Donahue from Fla) lists Heavy Duty 1963-64 Galaxie shocks that I think are from the Gabriel "Fleetline" series but I can't come up with a part number.

Anybody have intel on exactly what these are, or a shock with part number markings?

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Turning Galaxie front drums
« on: February 13, 2019, 06:04:03 PM »
No upgrade. Just servicing factory stuff.
I know most don't turn drums anymore....
Can somebody remind me, to turn (machine) Galaxie front drums (with hub) on a brake lathe, do the wheel bearings (inner, inner and outer) stay installed to fit the lathe?
Been too many years...

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Galaxie rear experts
« on: June 24, 2018, 07:22:46 PM »
My original 1962 Galaxie rear has the vent nipple on the drivers side tube. I picked up another rear that is identical in every way but the vent is on the pass side. I figure it has to be for a 1960-64 Galaxie. Neither rear looks to have been modified.

Anybody know why Ford made different vent locations?

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Converting Toploader to wide ratio
« on: April 19, 2018, 06:52:16 PM »
What parts are needed to convert big input close ratio to wide? I've looked at all the parts vendor's websites but I don't see a concise breakdown.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / slip yoke source
« on: February 25, 2018, 04:36:58 PM »
Looking for a driveshaft slip yoke for a street driven 427 top loader (28 spline output).
Any recommended sources?
Any suppliers to avoid?

FE Technical Forum / Exhaust valve recommendations
« on: May 26, 2015, 09:26:40 PM »
Looking for new replacement exhaust valves. Car is street driven 427 L/R. 1.65" diameter. Stock iron heads, stock rockers, stock cam.
Summit doesn't seem to offer much.
Should I look beyond the basic Sealed Power V-1875? I think they are Mexico now.

FE Technical Forum / Tuning oil flow to heads
« on: December 22, 2014, 07:38:49 PM »
I have way more oil flowing in the right head. Stock solid lifter valve train.
Unless there is some mad wear on the rockers I was thinking about restricting the right more than the left head.
Say .070" right, .090" left.
Anybody else seen this?

FE Technical Forum / Valve stem failure
« on: March 30, 2014, 05:37:39 PM »
Installed 8 new exhaust valves. 200 miles of street driving the tip broke off #7.
Ever seen this?
Cam, push rods and rockers are stock. No evidence of any piston contact.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Stainless header bolts
« on: March 16, 2014, 07:57:43 PM »
Any advantage/disadvantage to using stainless bolts in aluminum cylinder heads?
I've got a 2006 GMC with 6.0 gas. Since the OEM exhaust manifold bolts are known for breaking I was looking at, say a ARP, replacement but I live in the salt belt so stainless came up on the radar.
Not sure if the OEM bolts break due to poor metallurgy, shearing from expansion-contraction or embrittlement caused by thermal cycling.

To get the coolant level low enough do I have to remove the threaded plugs from the block skirts?

FE Technical Forum / Can anybody decode FPP part numbers?
« on: August 31, 2013, 09:11:23 AM »
FPP 242-99 #2931

Supposedly new in box pistons. I'm guessing these were from way back when he had a shop.
Did he have his own mfg or was he re-marketing somebody else's?

FE Technical Forum / Valve stem failure

All new exhaust valves and one of them has gotten peened over by the rocker arm after 120 miles of street driving. Nothing radical in the valve train (stock LR cam/stock valve springs). Most likely a heat treat problem. Not sure if I should pull both heads and scrap all eight.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Anybody use Carfax?
« on: June 23, 2013, 08:29:47 PM »
I think they charge about $35 per car. Is it worth it? I am looking at a 2006 truck supposedly one owner.
I recall somebody ran me a Carfax about 10 years ago but I can't remember much about how it works.
There is a competing company called Autocheck. I am thinking they provide the same info as Carfax?
