Toploader hydraulic throwout bearing
« on: September 07, 2024, 08:16:01 AM »
Switching from C6 to big input Toploader. Is there a hydraulic throwout bearing setup using OEM production components. The aftermarket conversions seem to be rather lavishly priced. I do have machining ability and machines in case modifications are required.

Not sure if there is much option for big shaft toploader

Brand is Mal woods and mine was made for a lakewood scatter shield

Ford small shaft toploader they just slide over the cover. I am not aware of one for a bigshaft toploader one that dose not replace the cover.

I purchased a McLeod unit from modern drive line . After fighting it for a year and pulling trans several times I spoke to modern driveline. Bruce said. Ya we had a lot of problems with those and no longer sell them. If you don’t like it talk to McLeod. They were equally helpful. Ended up giving it away and going external . Unless they have improved. I would not recommend McLeod.

Mine worked good I also had a Mal Woods under dash master cylinder. Only problem I had was the heavy clutch pedal that was more to do with the clutch and under dash pedal box ratio. I also had to run a spacer plate between the box and the bellhousing it was around 2 to 3mm thick.

I ended up swapping to C6 due to my father not being able to hold the clutch in at 73 years old.

But I will swap back in a few years and get Mal woods to fix the pedal ratio and or change the clutch to make it more user friendly.

JB427  I am hoping to learn from your experiences. I am running a Lakewood bellhousing with a Ford short shaft TKO600 (TCET4617) and a McLeod pressure plate. The clearance for a hydraulic bearing is minimal and it looks like the Malwood may fit. Do you know what size master cylinder you were using?

Mal Woods is local to me and he had to custom make it. I will have to look at the master cylinder sizes I ended up getting a second master cylinder that was larger to try and make the pedal softer and it did not really help that much. I will check the installed length for you as well.

clutch master cylinder was 5/8 not sure on the second one but is was bigger 11/16 I think I could be wrong on those sizes but they should be pretty close

From the face of toploader case to the throwout bearing face is 79.4mm or 3.125 inches.

You should go smaller on the master to get softer pedal. Longer stroke less effort

Im not sure what one was first but I had one of them came with my pedal box after Mal woods made the new pedal and it was almost no change when I got the second size. Clutch was solid centre deal. I will get Mal woods to sort it out when it is time to put it back in.
