The way I figure it, if your using 2291 pistons and "0" deck clearance, running a FelPro 1040 gasket, your only in the ~9.69/1 CR range. You can increase that to ~9.81 if you use the Victor/Mahle 3389 head gasket.

Howards will grind a custom cam at no extra cost and ordering a cam, using these lobes, with 112 LSA (59° overlap) and a 106 ICL (6° advanced) will get you noticeable overall increase over the shelf cam and everything your looking for. These lobes are the next step up from the shelf cam, with more ex duration. The 6° advance will help you with DCR and still easily run pump gas.

bhr225327 278 225 143 0.327 = .566 lift w/1.73 rockers , w/1.76, .576
bhr235327 288 235 150 0.327 = .566 "

In any case, you still need to be sure of PTV and coil bind clearance.

You might check on this forum. They usually have a lot of Y-block info:

I haven't updated this, for a very long time.

I went a different direction on it, regarding the engine, when Jay offered his TP heads. I found a 427 Marine short block and had it bored to 4.280, with a offset ground FT 390 crank, to a 4.115 or 473 CI.

I just got the heads back from Blair. He did his valve job on them and I have to clean up the chambers, blend the throat, into the port and give him the final cc to order the pistons. I also bought one of Jay's intake adapters for the TP heads and will make a TR intake for it, similar to the Weiand 351c, with 4500's on it, in a same manor as the 351c.

I'm a bit suspicious of those sonic numbers. With a 4.26 bore, they don't leave any space, or they would interfere with the adjacent cylinders. It sounds like you might have had the wrong metal setting.

Do you have any flow numbers for the TP heads?

The solution to this problem, is to run a small single stage, dry sump pump, from the front to the rear sump.

It wouldn't cost very much, because it needs no pressure regulation, just a 2 timing pulleys and a belt.

By my records, they are, 1138 = 1.66 CH 2.593 x .120 dp recess 428 piston, 13.5cc

Put them .030 down on a 10.17 block.

If your interested in changing your intake. This is what I would highly suggest you buy first:

https://fepower.net/GFEIC.html

In it 3 different 428 engines are tested, using 20 some intakes. There are also 3 more FE's engines tested, from 427 to 492 ci

I wish you all the best. I'm in my second year, fighting throat cancer. So far, so good for me. The treatment was the worst part.

Keep a positive mind set and keep working all that you can. It helps a lot keeping the mind busy.

That's a awesome engine!! Someone will be very lucky to get it.

I'm a aerospace machinist, of over 50 yrs experience. You can't use a end mill to spot face or counter bore a area, unless you can interpolate that area, with a smaller end mill.

End mills have a end cutting relief of 3 to as much as 7°. Meaning that the center of the cut, will be higher than the outside edge.

A c'bore or spot facing cutter could be used, by hand, IF the pilot is is very close fitting, say .002, and fairly light pressure used, so that you don't push it off to the side, while applying pressure.

All the above, is based on the hole, for the cross bolts has been done accurately in a milling machine.

The TFS FE head will flow 360-365cfm with a simple cartridge roll finish on the ports and no additional work.  NO Ford head short of the TP, HR heads will come close to that flow number and 175 cc port volume. At $2750.00 it is a great deal.    Joe-JDC
Joe, I have a set of TFS heads. Could you be more specific as what to do with that cartridge roll to get the extra 30+ cfm out of them?

Thank you

I was a mechanic, between '62 & '70 and it was the most common (at least in my area of SO Cal) to adjust valves. Messy yes and very hard on feeler gauges. I still have my set of feeler gauges that I used for that.

You also used a feeler gauge to find a loose rocker arm or bad lifter on hyd lifters.

FE Technical Forum / Re: No Cam Card
« on: January 31, 2025, 02:53:25 AM »
That's quite a cam!

Try measuring the LSA at .050 from the top of the lobes. If it's a asymmetrical lobe, it may be different.

Are there any markings on the front or rear of the cam?

Do you have any idea who built the short block?

It has a low lift for the 284 duration. I took a quick look at CC lobes and found a fairly close CR lobe, 315, 284, .395 lift and with that 104.5 LSA would give 105 overlap.

Points with a MSD is a good set up and the points become a non wear item with the MSD. Points in a point ignition system the points become an electro magnet from the current flow which is why points always get pits from opening and rubbing block wear while with the MSD its just an on-off switch with no current going through the points , even the rubbing blocks don't wear with the MSD
If that's the case, you wouldn't need a condenser or resister, right?

FE Technical Forum / Re: AUTOLITE INLINE 4V CARB
« on: January 21, 2025, 11:59:02 AM »
Has anyone tuned one of these carbs, since Jay did his?

It doesn't seem like it would that big of a problem, to get the bog out of it, to a well experienced carb guy. There are some very talented guy's out there.

It pretty much has to be in the transfer or emulsion circuit. I doubt that it would be lack of accelerator pump capacity, with 4 pumps, Holley's get along just fine with 2 pumps, per 4v.

Jay, did you try different size squirters?
