Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: 347 stroker life expectency

You can't argue with that kind of performance (331). I built a Shelby speck. GT350H a few years ago and used an Eagle 331 stroker assy in it. Had Trick Flow heads, Blue Thunder intake, Comp. solid cam, dual point dis. and a real K code carb. That engine was a pure joy, always eager to buzz 7000 pulling all the way!

Thanks guys for the input. My primary concern with the 347 setup is or was with the rod angularity but it sounds as though it works. I'm with you as to we'd rather have the FE. We looked at one Cobra advertised as a 427 but no matter how I looked with my flash light you couldn't see the cross bolts. We had them put the car on the hoist and sure enough...no cross bolts! Probably a 428 7 liter with a med. riser two four intake. It idled so smooth! Who ever bolted it together was not a FE man...oil leaks every where.

A friend is looking at a Cobra replica purchase and asked me about the 347 situation. My opinion is that the combination is a bit less than ideal so before advising him I attempted to do a bit of research. Google search revels mostly anecdotal info from Mustang forums or people selling engine parts, but an almost total lack of input from actual engine builders with experience in this area. Particularly the 331 vs 347 comparison for engine life and oil consumption. Comments anyone?

Yes I did, my opinion is in the case of the '60, the less gingerbread the better. I also eliminated the backup lights with LED lights across the top of the license plate. Sending you a photo.

I like your result with the floor repair. My Starliner was in similar condition, had to get it on a rotisserie. Was a 352 2v automatic, now is a 427 top loader, a blast on the road. At a car show only the lucky guessers know what it is. I'll try to add photos. Best luck with your project!

Is it possible to source 31 or 35 spline axles that will fit with small carrier and axle bearings?

FE Technical Forum / Re: Fidanza flywheel - ring gear
« on: June 22, 2025, 12:10:37 PM »
Two thoughts on this, first, the way I see it if standard replacement ring gears are available it would make no sense to tool up to produce your own. These flywheels are defiantly a low volume item. The second, I know this will sound a bit Mickey Mouse but if you ever looked at a ring gear that was damaged by a bad starter, generally the damage is limited to about four spots on the ring gear. This leaves quite a lot of useful areas still existing. You could heat the ring gear until it falls off or can be tapped of, relocate the bad ares and reinstall. Iffy I know.

Aside from altering DCR would a change from straight up to four degrees advanced cam timing have a noticeable effect on torque production in the 2,500 to 4,000 RPM range?

I have taken much info from your book and thank you. Now the question is, I have noticed that the cam timing on the dyno mules was set at 4 degrees advanced. For what particular reason was this done?

It takes a little over 1 gallon of fuel per 1/4 mile pass. That includes idle time in staging, the burnout, making the pass, shut down and returning to the pits. I would guess mileage to be about 1 mile per gallon. Jim
Have you experienced noticeable oil dilution from the alcohol?

McMaster-Carr has some nice fanged hex bolts that are not serrated (the serrated bolts will eat your aluminum pan in short order). Also if you have a windage tray sandwiched in there (which usually require two gaskets), deforming the pan at the bolts becomes more of a problem. You might be able to employ some pressure spreaders as seen with valve cover bolts.
