I've been down this road also and my tip is to pull the driven gear assy. from the transmission and inspect the teeth, also inspect the teeth on the drive gear, all the way around. Don't be surprised to find damaged teeth on one or both.

Brent, can't argue with your comments. I currently have a full groove main 390 crank in my 427. I am using half groove bearings. Is there a history of bearing failure or breakage with said crank? Also my interest in the forged crank is, I think I can swap a pair of valve covers for it and probably pass it on.

Info much appreciated. The crank in question is said to be std. and serviceable, I'll deploy the mics and we'll see. Would you characterize the early cast cranks as basically a 390 crank with maybe a different balance factor?

What was the mix (cast vs forged) crank used in regular 427 production? Did all of the forged cranks have the hollow crank pins and plugs? Ballpark value for a std. std. forged crank. I have not seen it yet so wondering.

In my last post I asked abut 427 lifter oiling, I am now seeking info as to what mix of cranks (cast vs Forged) went into regular production 427 engines. Also did the forged cranks all feature the hollow crank pins with plugs? I may have an opportunity to score a forged std. std. crank. Ballpark figure on value.

Thanks for the reply guys...sort of what I thought. I advised a friend who at the time was building a top oiler 427 to not use the Lemons rods. He used them anyway and is now on his second build because of...you guessed it, rods. So now his builder is talking hydraulic roller. I tried to tell him, we'll see. ::)

Were all street 427 top oiler engines solid lifter only? Also what is the rundown for side oilers? And while we're at it the marine and industrial 427 engines.

This info may or may not be helpful. These transmissions use GL4 lube made for brass blocker rings. The synchros do not want synthetic gear lube (hard shifting).  The detent thing can be very confusing (they changed the design at least three times). Take photos as you disassemble the various pieces, keep them in order, you'll be glad you did.

At that price point I am tempted to once again try a China product. I just know that it will look perfectly fine and would probably soon fail but for my purpose (just parts) it may just work, thanks for the heads up.

Need '60-'64 headlight switch primarily for the rheostat related parts. The switches varied somewhat year to year but the parts that I really need are most likely the same. A used switch for parts is preferred. zip 49078

I have a set of PROMAXX heads on my street 427 Starliner. I've had zero problems with them. Valve train geometry came in with minimal shimming. 72cc chamber with the smaller of their valve size options. Compared to the big "H" low riser heads with larger valves I would say I now have an extra 1,000 very strong RPM.

Slightly off subject here but a small hats off to Jay Broader for his help with a problem (self inflicted) with my C6 build. He didn't know me from Adam but was very helpful (answers his own phone)!

In your book, pertaining to the Edelbrock Performer RPM you note that this intake reacted differently to carb. spacer changes than did the other dual plane manifolds tested. Could you elaborate specifically what these differences were?

You can't argue with that kind of performance (331). I built a Shelby speck. GT350H a few years ago and used an Eagle 331 stroker assy in it. Had Trick Flow heads, Blue Thunder intake, Comp. solid cam, dual point dis. and a real K code carb. That engine was a pure joy, always eager to buzz 7000 pulling all the way!
