I`m 62 and still out there raseing He-- when ever I can. We live in a small town that used to be the gate way for the PA kids to come and drink (21 in PA then, 18 in NY). We we the hot rod capital in the area. More drag racing than you could shake a stick at. We coulda had own own tv show and put that show that on to shame. Hey Lenz remember?

Ah yes- the old drinking at 18 thing in NY back then- I was in a bar in the next town shooting pool at 15, when all three of our high school coaches walked in the front door- out the back I went, didn't get caught hehehe...

I can one up ya. my first new bike was a huffy rail. purple with a sissy bar & that bad ass red line slick. circa 1966 or 7. I was sofa king cool.  that was until it went into a death wobble at the top end & crashed. got a capped front tooth from that one. also born in 56. still have the bike though, & the tooth.

I also had a Huffy Rail- musta broke a dozen handlebar clamps from yanking back on the bars doing wheelies. Figured out how to loosen the friction clutch on the stick shifter so it would slowly shift up by itself as I rode, and told everybody it had an "automatic transmission" LOL
Got a black & white Polaroid Christmas Morning pic of it and my ugly ass somewhere

Last time I checked with a heavy tow, I went from Napa to Stockton, picked up a Farmall Super M Diesel, and back home with a 26K rated Trail King (a backhoe trailer) with my 2001 F350 4x4 duallie, 7.3 Powerstroke with an extra 100HP programmed in, 4" exhaust and exhaust brake, and got 19.6 MPG for the loop- and that trailer is a heavy sucker. It'll get about 23 on the freeway with a sweet spot at 72 mph.
7.3 just runs and runs and runs and......

LOL in '75 I got pulled over at 3AM at 120 plus on Silverado Trail in a '69 Boss 302 with the owner riding shotgun, and the cop says hey it's drunk-thirty in the morning, bad time to drive fast, and really, I just wanted to look at the car. Have a good night and be careful.

Walt Cantrell got what has to be the slowest speeding ticket ever in a gennie 427 Cobra, got pulled over on Saturday afternoon right in front of Courtesy Ford in Napa for going 40 in a 35- and got the ticket, no warning. Car salesmen loved it, by the time Deputy Dawg was done, there were at least 50 people in the parking lot watching

Tom is a good guy, no problems if he is local to you- where are you? I am in Napa, about an hour and a half from Auburn

I spend a lot of time doing repairs at the Port of Oakland, usually on Saturday when the cranes aren't running. Spent all winter down there after Loma Prieta in '89, first work was repairing one of the crane rails, the cranes run on two with a huge umbilical coil. In this yard, one of the rails was on the dock, which was constructed on pilings and didn't move, but the inboard rail was off the dock in the paved area, which sunk a foot during the quake. There were three new cranes already on the water from Korea, and they were looking at massive surcharges if unloading was held up- we made the deadline. And yeah, the cranes were sideways on the ship, they waited until the tide was right, and the cranes just walk off the ship on temp rails and power- quite a thing to watch.
You can tell when the crane operator gets a little rummy near end of shift, sometimes they will miss the pins on the yard dog trailer, pick the container up about 4 feet, and drop it down hard- poor bastage in the yard dog goes for a pretty good ride when it bottoms out

FE Technical Forum / Re: 427 Build for '67 Galaxie
« on: April 11, 2015, 12:13:37 PM »
Hard to beat the 445 setup for a street build, kind of hard to justify spending a lot of money on 427 parts if you're not going to work it hard- although a cast crank and some good used LeMans rods would be interesting). I don't get the idea of buying a new 3.78 assembly when the 4.25 is going to be pretty close in price? Why give up inches when they are basically free?

« on: April 08, 2015, 12:07:14 PM »
Lowest I've gotten with a 427 was a loose std bore (about .010 clearance!) with factory small dome TRW's, std $ steel crank about .003 and .0025, and a Milodon gear drive turning the cam, 7 lbs on a pretty accurate beam torque wrench- I could spin it with my little finger. More normal clearances would have no doubt brought it up a bit- but it did spin smooth and easy

Someday I need to get my old mid-60's slides from Watkins Glen converted to digital- Ford GT MKIII street car, Cobras and R-Models, Bob Bondurant's McLaren on the transport after he went by me upside down and backwards about 10 ft in the air at 150 on the front straight, Mark Donohue's 66 LolaT70 before and after it burned to the ground, and the 67 T70MKII with the flared fenders and yellow trim, Lothar Motshenbacher's beautiful silver McLaren, the gorgeous dark blue with light blue #8 T70 of Jerry Grant etc.. All the R-Model and 289 Cobra teams had a GT350-H parked in their paddock area, saw the engines get pulled out of two on Saturday and put in dead race cars then put back after the race Sunday

« on: February 17, 2015, 08:34:01 PM »
Might want to check if it's a 330MD- IIRC the MD version used a regular car/pickup water pump and small crank snout, maybe the rear flange is also standard. I used to have an F600 dump with one, and swapped the trans, but never had the clutch/ bell out of it
