The Road to Drag Week 2016 / THe road to Drag Week 2016 - Hemi Style
« on: July 10, 2016, 03:15:04 PM »
It just kills me to concede that my early Hemi powered 31 Plymouth coupe will not be ready for Drag Week 2016, but that is the reality I need to face. So on to plan B! I really need to reprogram my enthusiasm for the new plan, because it is not really there yet. I am still emotionally clinging to my dreams of running the Hemi-Coupe. Hopefully writing a blog here about it will get me energized! ;D

31 coupe:

So Plan B is to bring my 67 GTX that I ran in Factory Appearing Stock Tire (F.A.S.T.) years ago.

F.A.S.T. 67 GTX:

Last time I ran the car was 2010, and I blew up the Hemi by accidentally setting my two-step launch control to 9300 rpm instead of 3900.  :(  The plan now is to keep the budget somewhat low by putting together a 484 inch Hemi from spare parts that I have laying around, make some changes to the car for streetability and durability, but keep with the stock appearing theme. For Drag Week of course, I do not need to comply with the strict F.A.S.T. rules, so I will take some liberties as needed.

My son cam is now in tech school learning how to be a machinist. Each student was asked to design and build a project from the ground up. He has been hanging around my shop running machinery since he was a pup,  and loves the '48-'53 big block Ford/Lincoln 337 inch flathead. So while the rest of the class was designing things like bottle openers and rulers, he envisioned building an intake manifold for the 337. Using Solidworks and AutoCAD, he developed the code, and used a Haas VF3 CNC mill to carve out the finished product today. He built it to mount Rochester 2 GC carbs, but now he is inclined to build some risers that would mount Stromberg 97's.   Of course the old man is proud and needs to show it off on the internet! Tomorrow we will bolt it on the motor and get a couple more pics.

This could apply to any engine not just in the FE. For my Drag Week effort, I want to send a lot of oil to the valve train for maximum durability with high lift and hefty valve springs. But I often hear concerns about bleeding too much oil away from the main bearings when sending a lot of oil to the top end. When the pressure relief valve is  installed at or near the oil pump (normal), is any tap into the main galley really bleeding off pressure from  bearings that are downstream from it? If so, what would be wrong with moving the pressure relief valve to the opposite end of the main oil galley as the oil pump? Would there then not be full pressure at every point along the main galley, regardless of sending extra oil to the top end? (assuming that the oil pump has sufficient capacity.)
Thanks for any input.
Cordially,
The Artist formerly known as Trunkumus Munkumus

Cam saw a blue and white GT in town today. Is there more than 1 of those around here, or did Professor Brown blow the dust off of his? 8)

Dates and the 1st track announced!

Gateway at St Louie on Sept 13!

That make me happy because the Duesenberg Drag Race is the weekend before, and if Drag week would have been at the same time, I'd have to miss it.  Now I can make both!

ROMAC Ultralight Dampeners should be used in combinations where quicker engine response, or extremely high rpm is required.

ROMAC Ultralight Dampeners are manufactured with an Brutal Duty Elastomer band offering increased reaction to the extreme torsional loads created in today's high output racing engines. This design is infinitely superior to clutch or fluid designs that are designed to handle harmonics instead of the twisting of the crankshaft when the full weight of your car lands on the crankshaft.

ROMAC  Ultralight Dampeners with a CNC machined steel hub and an aluminum outer ring. They are the safest dampener offered, as the external balance weights are integral to the steel hub, making it absolutely impossible for the weights to come off the dampener. The aluminum outer ring overlaps the hub and is retained by a .125 thick retainer ring, completing the best engine dampener currently available.
ROMAC Ultralight Dampeners are dimensionally correct for ease of installation, guaranteeing minimal hassle in aligning pulleys and drive belts.  Also the outer ring has 360ยบ timing marks for your convenience.
ROMAC Ultralight Dampeners are SFI approved.

This part is new in the box, in new condition. The box shows shelf wear. You can buy one for $349.99 here: http://www.petersperformance.com/products/124.htm  OR you can buy this one for $225, including free shipping in the USA.
