A question for the old-timers like Randy etc.- and before I get the irate bum-rush, I have not weighed for bobweight yet. I have 454 combo with Crower rods and factory lightened Arias domed pistons, and the option of a factory 428 crank or a welded and offset ground to 3.98 391 FT crank. Love to use the 391 deal for strength, but it is one heavy sumbitch. I understand that back in the day it was popular to cut down the counterweights on the steel cranks when possible. I have a big South Bend so that part is feasible. The local speed shop guy who lives across the street, but is seriously Chebbie cross-threaded between the ears, is willing if I get the part matching and bobweight stuff ready. I swapped into the rods n pistons from a gent who was quitting racing, for a set of Eagle rods and dished pistons, so hopefully the rod and piston matching stuff is well done. Looking for actual been there done that experience from some old buggars lol- not a dozen "opinions". I know the 428 cranks are pretty tough and have been used many times, but it would be nice to be able to lean on this thing, I have some decent heads, cams and intakes. The 391 cranks are seriously heavy bastages, but strong as hell. If this one wasn't already car-modified, I wouldn't even think about it

Before you worked on it, did your engine have the original heads? The shock tower (or "GT") heads have their own bolt pattern than the rest, lower ports and only bottom bolts on the two end cylinders, and the two end upper bolts don not line up with the center ones. There are actually two different sets of Fairlane / Comet Hookers, one for the GT type heads and another for the Cobra Jet style. I have a '69 Ranchero GT with the 390IP engine, and the previous owner had "installed" the CJ type type headers, using some hacking techniques to get them bolted up, and they do NOT fit well. The CJ style also has some tubes going under the A-arms, so ground clearance is a little iffy. I don't think they make the CJ-type headers any more. And they are NOT the race headers, they are the small-tube style

FE Technical Forum / Re: starters

Have to agree with the heavy wire thing- my Galaxie has 4/0 aluminum wire from the trunk battery to the solenoid, and also battery to the frame, and welding cable from solenoid to starter, since 1978, starting with the 14:1 427 engine. Had the same starter all that time, a used factory 302-2V unit that I swapped the nose to the 3-bolt FE nose, still spins it fine with the current 12:1 deal

I like it , or find an old Dove TW and do a all Dove build! But for the money the TF is was above average.

Gee, look what I have! Kinda like to keep the 660's but not married to them

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Unexpected meeting Sunday
« on: April 29, 2026, 11:06:11 AM »
So I headed over to Sears Point last Sunday, they had a TransAm race along with some Historic stuff, including the Historic Stock Car Racing Association. Some friends have a Joe Gibbs/ Bobby Labonte car, and I was buying a Vertex from one of them. They had a 12 lap Stock Car race in the morning, and another as the last race of the day. Some pretty good iron around, a Petty car, Dale Jr., Ricky Rudd, Bill Elliot t-Bird, and the "Cole Trickle" car from the movie. In the morning session, I hear the announcer, several times, say "Bill Elliot picks up another position". What? Who? The Elliot Bird is not passing anyone, near the rear. Saw a car with a different paint scheme, but #9- and it's moving. Passed 2 cars in the hairpin Turn 11 to take 2nd. I head over to my friend's pit and ask, what is that a different Bill Elliot, or ? No, it's The Man, he's right over there! He's killing all of us! I head over there, there's a cluster of 6 cars being fussed over, including the off-color #9, that turned out to be a Chase Elliot car from 2010. One of the old Birds is on display. A golf cart pulled up next to me, and it's Awesome Bill himself- hey, how you doing? Just one of the guys, checking details and getting his game face on. So the last race started, and this time he's on the pole. 1st lap he has a 6-second lead, 2nd lap about 15 seconds, 3rd lap, the announcer says "and Bill Elliot is... gone". Lapped his 1st two cars on Lap 8, a couple more the next lap, lapped half the field in 12 laps- think that 70-year old can't still drive? He put on an incredible show, fast and smooooth

The Chinese can produce good stuff- if you pay them to. They build stuff to the price point they are paid for- which is usually "cheap". South Korea produces some VERY nice stuff if you pay them to- I have a Korean 6-speed transmission in my Indian, the castings are very nice, very quiet, absolutely no leaks, shifts excellent- just a nice piece

What do you expect for strength compared to the standard ones?

FE Technical Forum / Re: Truck headers for Dyno

Depending on the layout of the dyno cell, one could also try some Bassett boat headers. I have a set for a jet boat that are 1-7/8 with 3-1/2 collectors but no tight turns. Also have a set of stainless V-Drive big tubes similar to the race Hookers, IIRC they are 2-1/8 and 4". Not too easy to find, but if they would fit the cell, they should work pretty well. Also very serious boomers, they will drown out several 454 Chebbies with ease lol

Interesting- I do have an extra SCAT 4.25 crank
