At what point are the stock head bolts and main bolts a concern? And beyond that when do you move to studs, with an iron block that is.

FE Technical Forum / Thermal vaccum switch
« on: August 21, 2024, 02:02:21 PM »
Anybody every use one on purpose? I never have. But I'm thinking it might solve my drivability issue. Engine is generally cold blooded for whatever reason or another and I like to hop in this thing and go, its sluggish almost being held back at low throttle try to give it some more and a backfire through the carb. Only when cold, when warmed up absolutely no issues. Vac advance is bringing in to much timing when cold so thinking adding one of those thermal switches might be the trick?

FE Technical Forum / Stuck lifter
« on: June 14, 2024, 09:28:32 AM »
Driving home yesterday pressed on the pedal and a sudden tick tick tick miss etc, Found loose rocker arm on #4 exhaust. crap. Pulled the intake and offending lifter and found the plunger stuck down. Clip still in place but retaining ring was cracked, I assume it was collateral from the pushrod beating around. Everything else looks fine. Happened at maybe 2000 rpm and I limped it home about a mile.

Removed the plunger from the shell expecting to find debri or broken spring but all looked fine. Unable to disassemble the plunger assembly. Ill try again tonight but it was late last night.

Ideas why? This cam and lifters had little run time then sat on a shelf for about 5yrs, about 600 miles of cruising and beating the living snot out of it in the current engine over last few months. I should mention this is a flat tappet and I do not know what brand of lifters they where provided by Oregon cams.

Can I pull the guts from a new lifter and put them in the original shell? After doing some measuring and comparison of course. Or just throw a new lifter in and pray it breaks in.

FE Technical Forum / C6 fluid restriction
« on: May 08, 2024, 01:53:40 PM »
So I put one of those B&M deep pans on, about the only one that would clear the cross member. Fits good and well made. It came with a filter extension which uses some weird filter held on with machine screws. I don't like the looks of it flow wise. The feed hole is about 5/8" with goes to a 1/2" tube. Looks like it could be a restriction to me. Trans seems to shift fine and maybe i'm imagining things but seems like i can hear a slight squeal when really getting on it, like starving the pump.

Just wondering if anyone has any horror stories with these aftermarket filter setups or if i'm being paranoid. Next time that pans off tho I will replace with a 4x4 filter and custom stand pipe..

FE Technical Forum / Carter fuel pump
« on: March 21, 2024, 02:53:01 PM »
I picked up the Carter M4008 fuel pump I wanted the built in filter since there is plenty of room in this 74 F100 and its out of site for the most part. Two birds one stone kinda solution.   Summit lists this pump at 40gph and Carters website at 35gph. I'm thinking may be border line on this build. Disclaimer I haven't driven it yet so it may be just fine and I'm overthinking it.

My question is anybody use this pump and actually know what kind of power it will support? Additionally when is it time to upgrade the 5/16" formed line from pump to carb to 3/8" assuming the pump is supplying plenty of fuel for whatever HP, when does the line itself become the problem.

Is there a higher flowing pump with integrated filter? I really don't want to run an inline filter over the front of the engine. If it comes to it I'll probably go with the carter electric at 50gph there is a good spot on the frame where the 2 tanks once switched just a few feet in front of the rear/existing tank.

FE Technical Forum / Which part # for scat crank
« on: October 30, 2023, 04:01:29 PM »
Trying to stock pile parts as they are available for an upcoming build, 428 based. 4.25 stroke 6.7 rod BBC journals. A cast crank should be well enough as I'm only shooting for an honest 500hp. But which part number do I need? 9-FE-4250-6700-2200? Seems they have about 15 variations.

Ill use either Molnar or K1's. I figure I will end up with a custom piston so just trying to collect what I can in the mean time. Once the block and heads are verified then I can adjust the piston as needed to fit the build. If anyone has a part number for the Molnar's that would also be much appreciated.

FE Technical Forum / Anyone have a Bellhousing CAD print
« on: November 03, 2022, 10:20:54 AM »
Need to build a mount for a dyno cart, does anyone have the bellhouseing drawn up they would be willing to share? Possibly engine mounts and bell for 385 series would be great too, cut them both in one mount. Hoping to have them cut here at my day job on the laser if not I have a few buddies with cnc plasma tables. Thanks

Non-FE Discussion Forum / C6 1985 f250
« on: August 29, 2022, 11:13:27 AM »
So facebook market place got me again. Picked up a well used 1985 f250 with a snowplow which I definitely need and it will be nice having a dedicated plow truck for my property.

Question is on the trans, supposedly the trans is rebuilt with under 1000 miles. Well on the trip home (on a trailer as it would barley run) a battery cable which was for a secondary battery contacted one of the trans cooler lines and weld its self to the line melting a hole in it. I was unaware of the cables when I picked it up. Upon discovering the hole I noticed that there was no lost oil or any sign of oil at all, odd since I know the trans is full and I just drove it into the shop so I fired the truck up and confirmed no oil spurting from this broken line. Luckily it ran so poorly that I haven't driven it any farther then on and off the trailer. Seems to go in gear just fine.

What can cause this? The truck has mostly sat around for many years with very light use and Ive read on the internet that a stuck check ball in the stator is the most likely cause and just to remove it. Is there any other things that can cause this before I have to remove the trans.

FE Technical Forum / Rod bearing clearance how tight is to tight
« on: July 13, 2022, 12:48:21 PM »
390 crank turned .010, bearing clearance is coming in at .0015. King CR809AM010 bearings. To tight?? Hot rod/driver pickup. Not a race engine.

FE Technical Forum / crank thrust, I need some
« on: June 06, 2022, 09:45:06 AM »
Doing a quick mock up yesterday D3 block fresh from machine shop, stock 390 crank turned .010 and .010. Fm125 bearings. The thrust bearings fit very tight in the block and the cap throw everything together for a measurement and I've got about .002 to .0025. Pulled crank and thrust bearings inspected deburred, resembled no change.  Reset top cap few times smacking crank back and forth no change.

Crank spins beautifully but not enough thrust clearance. What is the best way to gain some, remove thrust bearings and sand a little on the front side? Do these FM125 bearings normally fit that tight in blocks?

FE Technical Forum / pin locks L-2291
« on: May 18, 2022, 01:30:23 PM »
Using a set of lightly used L-2291 pistons on a new build. (cleaning out under the bench) Figured I would get some new pin locks and unfortunately it appears the original LR-N540098 locks are no longer available nor can i find old stock. Anyone have a recommendation on what I can use in place of?

FE Technical Forum / Short water pump
« on: March 29, 2022, 09:32:59 AM »
Anyone make a short shaft water pump? Something to eliminate the couple inches sticking out the past the pulley groove. The idea of modifying the shaft and using a press fit power steering pulley is going through my mind.

A couple inches right at the water pump would really help me in some cooling fan options.

FE Technical Forum / sparkumplugs
« on: March 25, 2022, 09:45:40 AM »
A friend just gave me some NOS Motorcraft BRF31 spark plugs, about 30 of them.

I plan to run them in a fresh 390 with about 9 to 9.5-1 compression. Duraspark distributor hooked to an MSD digital 6 plus. Any flaws in this plan? anyone familiar with these old plugs? What little info I could find seems like these should work really well for the application.
