Part of off season upgrades include some new 31 spline Moser shafts for Fairlane. I pulled the driver’s side yesterday and saw this. The passenger side appeared straight. They were out of a 68 GT 350.

Are they 28 or 31 spline factory axles? I am still unsure if i will go 31 or 35 spline an axle braking or a tail shaft failing is like taking a can opener to even strong parts of your car if they don't put in the wall or worse ive see what happens when a tail shaft brakes on a dyno a friends bmw v10 drift car looked like a bomb exploded and another brand new build falcon first time at the drags for fun not even a really fast car broke the tail shaft and wrote the car off. Axle broke on on the falcon race car and almost took out the rear quarter that one broke at the flange but from coming off the track at high speed then slow speed bump finished it off wheel did stay under but made a mess that is for sure.

Lucky you caught it before it broke. OEM axles? 28 0r 31 spline?

That is an OEM 31 spline axle from the aforementioned GT 350. If I was doing it from scratch I would go 35 spline. I’m working with my TrueTrac 31 spline differential so bought the 31 spline Mosers.

Odd, they usually twist in a linear fashion (more towards the drum side, not inside the spyders) well outside of whatever differential is used. Those wavy splines inside the diff are very odd.

Have seen my share of broken OEM's but almost always in drag racing. I wonder if  heavy track road racing, with lots of hard an/off cornering, was the culprit here.

Main thing is you caught it now before a failure on the bright side your car must be hooking up ok at the track.

Road racing almost never see them twist they brake or crack from coming off the track sideways and hitting ruts and bumps off the track.

Last axle I twisted off was coming off a light. I pulled second and it came unhooked. I was about a half mile from my intended goal, (Taking my daughter to school in the morning) and I had enough speed up that I coasted to the parking lot. I pulled it apart when the 'hook' got me home.

It looked just like your picture. I used a long piece of copper tubing with a small steel cable in the middle with a loop on the end to get the stub end out and slipped in a replacement shaft. The bone yard asked $35.00 for the replacement. :)

I'm just surprised a 68 GT350 had 31 spline axles.

All the 271 HP Fairlane & Mustang's, from at least '64, had 9" rears and top loader 4 speeds.

A friend calls me up and asks if I want a 9” from a Mustang that he has. He had bought it out of a private boneyard for his 65 2+2. It was a later housing and of course too wide for his 65. I take a look at it and my eyes about fell out of my head when I saw it had a SPEC case.
It was dated 12/67. Supposed to be out of a 68 GT 350 carcass. Had an open 3.89 diff.
I wanted to upgrade my Fairlane so I put the axles in my car with the new TrueTrack diff. The housing was sold and the case went to a guy with a W code Fairlane. The more serious I get about trying to get a number at track with car caused me to consider how much I should be asking of 50 plus year old factory axles.
Can that axle be straightened and used in a pedestrian manner or is it only wall art now?

Yeah but a 68 GT350 didn't have a K-code 289HP/271hp they had the J-code 302/230hp.The 69 went to the 351W.

Yeah my 68 J-code 4 spd. mustang didn't even have a 9 inch.

Must have been a non-GT J-code?  Not an expert on 68s, but as I understand, J-code GT got 9 inch and front disks, non-GT got drums and 8 inch.

J-codes are good running stock 302s, hope to be doing one here shortly.  Last one was an overachiever with only mild changes

GT350s used a "DSO C8ZX" axle assembly specifically for them. 9" 31 spline , N case , Daytona retainer. Usually open , not traction lock.

Mine is a non GT but had front disc brakes, the little 302 was just that, someone had swapped in a Crane fireball cam and a set of headers and that thing surprised me at how strong it was when you got the rpm's up.

I've twisted 2 sets of Moser 31 spline axles in the same manner as your stock one here. 3200 lb stick shift 393w small block 68 Fastback street car 11.48 @119.5. Put the 33s and a spool in it as the Moser warranty doesn't apply to 28 and 31 spline axles. I then pulled the 33s out to fix an axle bearing a few years ago and the 33 was twisted too. Called Moser for warranty and they said they wont replace it until its twisted a full spline. I tried to explain to them that this was a stick car and if it gets that bad it'll just snap but they wouldn't hear it. So I dont buy Mosers anymore. Strange is the way to go. Moser cuts their splines after hardening. You can see it when you get them. Strange cuts splines and then hardens, much better axle for like 20 dollars more.

That is great info Chris. I thought I would be ahead of the game with the Mosers. Now it looks like I will have to check them after some number of passes if I end up getting a good bite. I would have spent more for the Strange axles if I had known.
We’re both sides twisted?
Thanks!

My Fairmont has had Strange axles for 35 years now. 33 spline back when it was an automatic with transbrake, but when I put the Jerico 4 speed behind the 428,21 years ago, I went up to 35 spline, because the 33s were showing a bit of spline twist. That said, when I built my 85 Mustang 302 stickshift Stock Eliminator car, I found a new set of 31 spline Moser axles advertised locally, so I used those in the 8.8 rearend. I broke a couple of ring and pinions, and twisted the housing, but never hurt the axles. Even when I stopped racing in Stock, and put in the 331 SBF for 4 seasons, which ran low 10s, dropping the clutch at 6600, mid 1.3 60 foots, I never hurt those 31 spline Moser axles. I have 31 spline Dutchman axles in my 59, and I have been happy with all 3 brands of axles that I have used. Mark Williams are generally regarded as the highest quality axles, but I have no complaints with any of the brands that I have used.
