Ford Thompson power steering pump 1966-70
« on: April 04, 2021, 09:34:13 AM »
66 Fairlane GTA Lengendary FORD May/June 2009
I want to share this issue with owners of Ford Thompson power steering pumps from 1966-70.
I found a power steering pump from Lares in Minnesota to solve noisy and other failure issues. They install the Saginaw vane pump internals in the stock Thompson pump housing. Instead of a slipper skirt type cam pack assembly that is no longer available I understand. The noise and pump inconsistency are eliminated. They also have the pump reservoir an exact duplicate of the original. The pump comes with a lifetime warranty (commercial use excluded)
and is a new pump.

But the whine is how you know a Ford is nearby.  The noise is harmless but this seems to address it if it does bother you.

I`m wondering if this would work with the hydroboost system? It would need 2 return lines.

Sure it would.  You don't need two independent return lines.  You need only to put a T-fitting on the return line to the pump.  I have a hydroboost on a car and this is how that kit was engineered.  Works fine.

One thing on the Saginaw pump that's kind of important for hydro boost is the external adjustable pressure relief. I wonder if they incorporate that in their Thompson conversion?
