The clutch fork attaches to the pivot fulcrum as well as the TO bearing. Personally I prefer the later (68?) pivot that has a square hole, and a thin leaf spring riveted to the fork. The earlier style with the thin wire that hooks onto a tab on the pivot can be a real PITA to get the wire clipped onto the tab, without damaging the wire.

I use a Lakewood with a '68-later big spline fork. I got my parts from Tony Branda. I think you can just switch the bracket for your '66 style "hair clip" for a '68-later bracket.

And get a fork.

Small spline (I'm not 100% sure if this is a small spline) - http://www.cobranda.com/19clfocty.html
Large spline (I use this one)  - http://www.cobranda.com/19clfolsp.html

Glance through the site, lots of cool repopped parts.

In a word, yes. The wire clip is just there for assembly essentially. Once everything is in place and linkage connected, the wire clip is just along for the ride.

I don't have any pictures of mine right now, but this should help you along.

Make sure your spring doesn't have too much arch they will develop more every time it gets taken apart its no biggie just straighten it out some it literally is just a spring to hold the fork against the fulcrum during assembly.the ends go thru the holes on the side webs of the fork at the pivot point the middle with the sag goes under the punched out lip in the middle of the fulcrum.
