A science lesson on the Doppler effect. A must see for all school students. My introduction to the DE was standing on the front seat of my old man's '59 Buick Invicta convertible and regularly going over 120 mph past the local church bells. And I thought I was nuts.

Yeah I "hear ya" on the Doppler effect.  My first driving lesson on the highway was memorable!  A guy in a Ferrari 512 BBi went by me at full song, like I was going backwards.  Man that sounded amazing!

When I bought my sway bar for the 62, the guy at Quickor was explaining a 63-1/2 Galaxie that he helped develop suspension parts and shocks for. It was intended for open road racing. I'm wondering if this is the same car.

That looks like one of the places out west where they hold a 'top speed' event. Probably not, but it looks like it. He likely had a fuel truck waiting for him at the end of that straight shot..lol

Mojave high desert area - CA.  My dad used to do those exact runs in the fifties while testing pursuit cars for the FBI.  He liked the 430 MEL in a low-option Mercury!  The Turnpike Cruisers were also fast, but too flashy for government work.

I bet he would have smiled in a Starliner or a 406 / 427 Galaxie    Alas, he was done with that stuff by 1960 and off to the corporate world.

With my '64 Custom/427, using 8.20-15 tires on the back and a 3.50 rear end, third gear was good to more than the speedo (120) would go. The '64 dash was laid-out in such a way that the needle on the speedo would disappear to the right and briefly show in the red idiot light for the 'gen'. I had several experiences of running a corvette or a 409 and downshifting to 3rd at 80. I'd need to shift to fourth after the needle disappeared. I measured the tire radius on the rear and did the calculations. I don't remember the exact numbers but I could pull six grand plus in top gear. And the offending chibrolay would be nothing but a dot in the rear-view. (The front end became a bit light above 130.

We got som more or less deserted roads here and i have hide the speedo needle a few times on the 64.
I raced a 90s TransAm GTA, att 255 kmh on his speedo he had no more to give and i passed him easy.
Was his speedo correct? Probably not .so hard to say actual topspeed but totaly stable at that speed
I have gone 297 in Wifes Mercedes on the GPS and i Believe that was faster

The Mustangs must have 6 cylinder engines  , and seeing as how my '09 GT would do 150, that Boss 302 must have been cruising in neutral.

Notice the engine sound did not change one bit on the GT40 when hitting the curve at the end! That guy has huge kahunas doing that with a multi-million dollar car!

A interesting and well documented car that has been doing that run for decades Is RJ's Big Red Camaro....Its a very cool car with a story to tell..He has hit 200+mph on that run many times...Lots of good video's on u-tube at speed.There is a good one of him going Pikes Peak...Lots of cool and interesting cars show up for this run...There is a unlimited class as well..Would love to do it in my 68.
