Brake drums for a 73 f250
« on: October 05, 2020, 05:36:41 AM »
I have this f250 which has std. brakes .This means it has 2" rear shoes and a single piston caliper .I cant find a listing for the rear drums .npd has a # for 66-72 but not a 1973 .They list a drum for a 73 with the h.d. brake option but not std. Somehow I believe the drum for the 66-72 will work but the parts guy doesn't want to commit and if they are wrong I have to pay shipping .Does anyone know of a supplier with more than average sense? Here are some #66-72 f250 12 1/8"-2" f-1126-6 that # goes back to 1957 for F250s .I don't have enough confidence in them to order these drums and they be wrong .They had rotors and they fit perfectly! but these old drums are probably .100 over Any help would be appreciated .Doug

Have you tried a standard auto store, like a Napa, Autozone or similar? They should still be able to get parts, and getting the right part and shipping is their responsibility.

And I believe you're right, the '73 still uses the standard Dana 60 rear as the '67-'72, so brakes should be the same.

Edit: I just checked their website and Napa shows multiple options for rear shoes for both the 12.13"x2" and the 12"x2 1/2" brakes.

https://www.napaonline.com/en/search?text=1973%2BFord%2BF250%2B3/4%2BTon%2B%2BPickup%2Btruck&q=N%3D5002600%2B5002800%2B200280280%2B10197300%2B2500003%26Nty%3D1%26Ntt%3D1973%252bFord%252bF250%252b3%252f4%252bTon%252b%252bPickup%252btruck%26Ntk%3DKeyword_EN&referer=PLP&leftNav=leftNav&isBackButtonEnabled=true

Is the truck a 4x4 or 4x2? There is confusion on the 4x4 trucks in that people ask if it is HEAVY DUTY....only one type of brakes on them, so they were standard, not HD. But some home the terminology carries over....HD had the 2 1/2" as did the 4x4 (standard)......going by memory but the brake parts interchange on these old Ford trucks is a nightmare....lot of bad info, or no info.

Try doing a little research on the Rock Auto website. Their listings usually have a decent description of the parts and their applications. I have a similar problem with my F 250 2WD. Now has a Dana 60 from a 72, 73 or 74 F 250. The orig 69 rear end had "outboard" brakes.[Old trucking term] Outboard brakes meaning the drum can be removed without disassembling the floating axle assembly. "Inboard"= The axle and bearings have to be removed to access the drum.

Not 100% sure, but I think you need a Centric 12365016 which should be an 8 lug 2" wide drum that fits "light" duty rear or Dana 44 front on a 4x4. My old book shows this as 8 lug, but a quick interweb search shows it might be drilled for a dual lug pattern.

Or is it a 5 lug?

Go over to the Ford Truck Enthusist site, get to the catagory and click on 73-79 site and ask either Number Dummy or TA455HO about the brake s used on you truck. It really helps if you have the data plate info. Number Dummy is very good as he worked at a dealership and has a ton of parts books to reasearch from. TA455HO is good and can get the answer  aswell.  He fills in for Number Dummy as NB can be a little crass at times.  You might have to register but it s a great sight for Ford trucks and lots of info on Ford trucks.

The last time I bought a set of these no one local had any. I had to order them and it took quite a while to get them. Next time I'll probably get them from Rock Auto, I'd probably have them a week faster!

The "light duty" F250's are sorta rare around here, so it doesn't surprise me it's hard to find those drums. It took me a week to get calipers for my 73 F250 Camper Special with the more common 2 piston calipers (although the 73's still used the older bolt on style).

Good luck!

Closed knuckle 4x4's use those 2" shoes/drums as well.

I buy most of my brake parts from a HD clutch shop in town. They mostly do big truck and equipment stuff but can get most automotive stuff. I think they have a set of those drums on the shelf, I can buy 'em and ship them to you if you can't find any.

I know of a couple old brake supply houses I need to make a trip there just to busy sometimes .Thanks for every ones help.Just to brag a little my 460 powered comet went 6.75 @ 100 last weekend we have one more race at my local track so I gots to go when I can! Your drums sound like the ones with two screws (outboard brakes) like my 1965 F-250. Your post gives me another reason to rotate my tires. When I do I'll post photo's and measurements. What measurements do you need?

EDIT: Just a note here my axle is the slightly narrower bolt up twin to a 76 Highboy. If I remember right the difference between backing plates was 5/8"

No drums yet .BUT I believe this is the p.n. pdr0012 and I googled a 1970 f250 with 12x2 brake shoes and this number came up and the picture looks very similar to mine .I contacted Bendix and they were really helpful but couldn't commit to what I needed .Just guessing most f250s came with the heavy duty brakes seems to me that would have been a special order though .Regardless Summit is supposed to be able to order these drums .The good thing is summit is really good about returns .Thanks for the help guys! I just got back in town. I have a bunch of stuff waiting in willcall for work at the brake store so when I stop to pick that stuff up I'll ask about the drums and see what I come up with if your Summit ones don't pan out.

I'll be stopping by there on Monday as the rest of my order for work will be in and I need to buy stuff for my own junk again and I can follow up.

It's Brake & Clutch Supply, their phone is 206-622-5655. I usually deal with Jeremy or Paul. They are mostly a big truck supply outfit, but they carry or have access to just about anything and have been good about ordering me odd ball stuff in the past. They had the rotors on the shelf for my 73 F250 CamperSpecial even!
