5.4 starter repair
« on: May 31, 2020, 11:34:38 AM »
The kick out solenoid on the starter doesn't work.  The starter spins but doesn't engage.  Getting the starter off was easy.

Should I just replace the solenoid or the complete starter?

Thanks

IMHO - DO NOT buy anything rebuilt.  Find a local rebuilder and use them.  Or go to a wrecking yard and source a good used OEM until while your stocker is in the shop.  Rebuilds from parts stores are crap.

I kept both the starter and alternator from my 7.3 and had rebuilt locally. Got lucky and picked up a new motorcraft starter for free, rebuilt original is still on the shelf. Bought the lifetime alternator from Napa, bet I've warranted it 8 times. Throw the rebuilt original on until I get time to change it back out. They must have finally stepped up the quality tho, haven't had to change one in couple years.
